The GM Diet (General Motors Diet): Does It Work?

I don’t know if I should love or curse Pinterest for this pin I stumbled across for the GM diet. Have you heard about the GM diet? It’s a week long diet/cleanse based on eating only fruits, veggies, and a vegetable soup for rapid weight loss. Eating all the fruits and veggies I want for 7 days with the goal of losing 10 or more pounds? I’m in.

Though I must apologize in advance because this post is going to be really long due to the amount of information there is to share about the GM diet.

The GM diet, was supposedly designed by General Motors for their employees and dependents to facilitate its health and fitness program. Supposedly. From what I’ve read, the GM diet is not endorsed by the General Motors Company. I can find lots of research to say that, but not much “official” research to say that GM claims the GM diet.

Anyways. I showed the GM diet plan to Jason, and because he knows I have zero willpower, he said he would do the GM diet with me. We started the day after Super Bowl. I thought I could do anything for 7 days; I was wrong.

Does the GM Diet Work?

I wouldn’t know because I was ready to gnaw my arm off on Morning 3 and didn’t make it. On the other hand, Jason did make it through the entire week.

Did the GM diet work for him? Yep, it sure did…but not without some side effects.

Here is his daily weight:

Day 1: 200.8 pounds

Day 2: 197.7 pounds

Day 3: 195.7 pounds

Day 4: 193.5 pounds

Day 5: 191.3 pounds

Day 6: 190.0 pounds

Day 7: 189.1 pounds

Jason lost 11.7 pounds in just 7 days. However he was extremely tired, lethargic, no energy, grouchy, and generally hungry. He did it for me…and he wanted to know if it would really work so I could share all of this on my blog.

The GM diet didn’t work for me, and it may not be for everyone, but based on what happened with Jason and some of the other reviews I’ve read, people are promoting the GM diet.

For those of you interested, here is the GM Diet plan.

The GM Diet 7-Day Plan

Have you heard of the GM diet (General Motors diet)? Over 7 days, you could lose 10-17 lbs. on this diet/cleanse. Does it work? One blogger shares results.The GM diet is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter by atleast 10 pounds. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.

During the first seven days you must drink 10 glasses of water each day. You must abstain from all alcohol.

Beverages you may consume while on the GM diet :

1. Water (flavored with lemon/lime if desired).
2. Club Soda is OK.
3. Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
4. Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
5. Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

DAY ONE
All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consists of all fruits you want. It is suggested you consume lost of watermelon and cantaloupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

DAY TWO
All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the new and cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the account or type. Avoid oil and coconut while cooking vegetables. Have large boiled potato for breakfast.

DAY THREE
Any mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet and no potatoes today.

DAY FOUR
Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. You can also have 1 bowl of vegetable soup.

DAY FIVE
Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

DAY SIX
Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your heart’s content.

DAY SEVEN
Today your food intake will consist of 1 cup rice, fruit juice and the vegetables you care to consume. Tomorrow   morning you will be 10 – 17 pounds lighter than 1 week ago.

You have your system under control now and it will thank you for all the purging and cleansing you just gave it. Even more than a diet program it is good to follow the GM diet once in a while to clean your digestive system and remove toxic substances that have accumulated in the system.

Additional Comments about the GM diet

The most important element of the GM diet is the 10 tall glasses of water a day. You can also flavor the water will some lemon to make the drink easier. While on the program, take only black coffee and never more than one teaspoon of oil. Preferably do not use oil because the high calorific content. No fruit juices before day seven.

If you desire further weight loss, repeat the GM diet again. Repeat the GM diet as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you rest for three days before every repetition.

If you decide to repeat the GM diet, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon,vodka, rum) is forbidden. Cream drinks are especially forbidden. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks. If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

Here is what happens to you body while you are on this program and how and why it works:

Day 1: You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh fruits. Fruits are nature’s perfect food. They provide everything you can possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.

Day 2: Starts with a fix complex carbohydrates in the form of a boiled potato. This is taken in the form of a boiled potato and taken in the morning to provide energy and balance. The rest of the day too consists of vegetables which are virtually calories free and provide essential nutrients and fiber.

Day 3: Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from fruits. Your system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will have cravings, which should start to diminish by day four.

Day 4: Bananas and milk. You are in for a surprise. You probably will not be able to eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there fore the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the last three days. You will notice a definite loss of desire for sweets and you will be surprised at how easy this day will go.

Day 5: Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colourless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five “quarter ponders”. Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.

Day 6: It is similar to five. is similar to day five. Iron and proteins from beef, vitamins and fiber from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.

Day 7: You may celebrate with champagne. You may also have white wine instead of champagne, but in all practical programs, and in all surveys done to measure the success of the program, General Motors employees have always preferred champagne to white wine.

Ingredients

  • 28 oz water
  • 6 large onions
  • 2 green peppers
  • 3 whole tomatoes (fresh or canned)
  • 1 cabbage
  • 1 bunch celery
  • 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix
  • Herbs and seasoning as desired

Instructions

  1. Cut up all of the veggies and add it to the boiling water. Season with the soup and herbs.
  2. Let cook until the veggies are tender, about 30 minutes.

Notes

I used WAY more water than the 28 ounces called for in the recipe. I also read several variations of this recipe that allows you to use any veggies that you would like in this soup.

  2. Sounds tempting, because I have these last 10 lbs I really need off! But, because I’m breastfeeding, I can’t. My brother-in-law has done this, and swears by it (though honestly, I didn’t see any difference with his weight), and my sister tried it but claimed she nearly passed out by day 4. :)

    After the baby has weaned, I might give this a shot. Although I’m notoriously weak-willed when it comes to food. :)

    • Well I only made it to the beginning of Day 3 and thought I was going to die!

      I don’t know if I would try it again…I’m not opposed to it. Though this time instead of eating the fruits and veggies, I think I would blend them into smoothies and drink them.

  3. I’ve heard about this before and looked into it a little. There is good and bad out there about it. For me it seems really restrictive and I’m not sure I could talk anyone into trying it at my house.
    I’d like to know how the weight loss goes after you’re done with it.

    • Yes – but the instructions about it are ambiguous so my husband didn’t eat a ton of it, though I think he probably could have since it’s all water.

      • On the recipe for the soup it says you can it any amount of it on any day. Can I eat it starting on day one when it says only fruit?

    • This plan works really well, this is the second time I have done it. The first time I lost 11 pounds. For those of you saying you are gonna pass out or your still sure hungry, increase your intake. Get creative with how you prepare your fruits and vegetables. I am currently on day 5 of my second round. Is it challenging sure, but just remember your willpower and you will be fine. Good luck all!!

    I am on second day now and out of vegetables in the house :)
    However, even if I do not loose any kg, or maybe just 1 at the end, this diet offers cleaning of the mind and strengthening of the soul :)
    Maybe it sounds silly, but if we think how much we can overeat on daily basis, for years, then what are 7 days to just try and concur our weaknesses?
    Once I tried the diet I found out how much the food is in control of me.

  15. I need to lose 30 lbs. I am on day 6. I have lost 6.4 pounds. It has not been that bad, however day 2 about killed me. I should have eaten more cooked veg but I brought raw to work and gag! Today I had a 4 oz lean hamburger patty for breakfast and 5 oz of fajita meat with grilled peppers and onions. I drank a 12 oz FauxJito (seltzer with mint and lime) which was pleasant. Tonight it’s grilled steak with more grilled veg. I have not cheated … Not one time but I do not think I will lose 10 by the end of day 7. After day 5’s 17 oz of beef and all those tomatoes I didn’t see any weight loss at all this morning which was kinda depressing. We shall see. Not sure I can go another week. I miss red wine!

    • Depending on which GM Diet you stumble across, the plan may be different. I removed the infographic because it was so much different than the other plans I’ve seen. Thanks for stopping by!

  37. Day 3 and 5 pouonds down. It’s not that hard and I have enough energy to work out. The only downfall is the milk, for me. I hate the taste of it and am Lactose intolerant, so drank almond milk instaed. I love it and gives my a good start to continue with a healthy weight loss routine.

  38. Just started. I will try to tough it out and see. I need to lose 20# so looking for a quick start. Planning on spaghetti squash and fresh tomato pasta sauce for day 2 based on the other comments about the raw veggies. I will eat my potato baked tomorrow. Another site says it’s ok and even lets you have a small pat of butter with it. Every site I’ve been to says eat the soup anytime and any day you want, so I will be making it tonight. I will check back in 7 days from now. Oh – and some inconsiderate idiot brought doughnuts to work today – just to test my willpower dang it!

  39. Well I escaped the doughnut, but got really weak in the afternoon, so I had a granola bar, otherwise held with the program. Down 2.3# this morning! Yay team!!! On to veggie day 2. Starting with baked potato. Brought the spaghetti squash and pasta sauce with me and also a bowl of the soup too. That may become standard with me through the process. The soup is excellent and makes you feel like you’ve eaten a meal. Have the other squash half for dinner tonight so onward I go!

  42. Well I finished. I am down 7 # but not sure I could stick with this long term. Those all fruit days were hard to feel satisfied. Much preferred the mix days and will probably continue with that until I shed the rest of the weight. For quick weight loss it’s hard to beat!

    • So I did this diet at the beginning of the month and lost 10 lbs! And felt really great. The first 3 days were the toughest though. That 3rd day, I had a headache that I could not get rid off, and you feel totally lethargic and depleted of all energy. But by day 4 you are good, no sugar cravings, and the bananas, milk and soup are enough to keep you full. However I realized what needs to be improved for my next go around. So I am doing it again.
      These are some tips that helped me:
      Fruit day – is tough, especially toward dinner time. I made myself a large fruit salad (apple, pear, nectarine and blue berries), chopped up some fresh basil and a small tsp of EVOO with Salt and Pepper. I know…sound gross, but was sooo good! And it broke up the sweetness of the day with something a little more savory.

      For days 2 and 3, you definitely need to break it up with some hot food you can cut into. The raw veggies get really boring. So I marinated some portobellas in balsamic vinegar and garlic. I will grill that today. And making a stir fry with riced cauliflower and some sriracha will absolutely be satisfying. Wish me luck for this go-round. Hope this was helpful!

I am doing this diet right now, on day 2, I am following it super strict, to the “T.” I lost exactly 5 pounds on day 1, that is definitely the motivation I need to keep going, I can’t WAIT to see my results on day 7! There is nothing really easy about doing this, especially if you’re a huge meat eater like I am, I am so looking forward to when I can eat lean beef. The first day about killed me, all that fruit, and I stuck to watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe to maximize my results and seriously, it worked. I was so excited to see that 5 pound drop immediately. Make SURE you drink the required water. I can actually FEEL the physical change in my body already, and it’s only day 2. You have to follow this precisely, or you might as well forget it. When it tells you no cream in your coffee, they mean it. There’s a scientific reasoning for what you are and aren’t allowed to have. Obviously, this isn’t some long-term diet, nobody in their right mind could or would want to make this their everyday meal plan, but it’s only 7 days, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
