What Time Do You Post Your Blog Posts?

Usually when I wake up in the morning, I come downstairs with the kids and get on the computer to post my blog post for the day, check emails, and see what else is going on in the world. This morning though, that didn’t happen. I got sidetracked and by the time I realized that I didn’t post what I wanted to, I thought to myself Well, it’s too late to post now.

Then I started cleaning and went on with my day. And that’s when it hit me: why do I always post in the morning? Why not in the afternoon or evening? And why do I always feel like I have to post at the same time? Does anybody even care or are there any consequences of either doing or not doing it the same way day in and day out?

I used to post every evening at 8:45 pm PST. I don’t know why, that’s just when I did it. Then when Ethan started preschool last year, my schedule got tossed all over the place and I started posting first thing in the morning, between 7 and 8 am. I noticed no increase or decrease in visits to my blog. Nobody asked about the change. Heck, I never even pay attention to other people post so I didn’t think it mattered much.

Then last week, I read something Mama Kat wrote about your blog feed and she mentioned that she likes to get new blog posts delivered to her inbox early in the day so she doesn’t feel like she’s late to the party when she goes to leave a comment. I don’t pay attention to how many comments are left before mine on someone’s blog, but it made me wonder if others do. Because if I’m being honest, I read a TON of blogs but don’t leave a whole lot of comments.

I’ve also heard that you should publish blog posts early in the morning, east coast time. But I looked back at my stats and it seems that I get traffic to my blog in the morning, at noon, and again in the evening. So I don’t know if it really matters or not when I’m posting.

Which then led me to wonder about ya’ll – do you care about how many comments are posted before you get around to reading a blog post?  Do you leave lots of comments or do you just read lots of posts and then help promote the ones you like? What time do you post your blog posts? Why did you pick that specific time? What are your thoughts on this? Am I driving myself crazy about this for absolutely no reason?

  1. Overall I don't really pay attention to when a blogger posts because I do not always read at the same time every day. That being said, I do understand Mama Kat's point. Occasionally if a post resonates with a lot of people, and I don't read it right away I feel like there is no point to commenting. Someone probably already said what I want to say or made the point I want to make. No matter what time you publish though, there will probably be someone who won't read it for awhile. Every one's schedule is so different. I used to read in the morning but lately I find that my reading is scattered throughout the day. Stephanie recently posted..Always DreamingMy Profile
  2. I post early in the morning PST but don't really see a difference in comments no matter what time I post. I don't care if a ton of people comment before me either. I don't read people's comments before I post mine so I probably repeat what others have already said. Oops! Lindsay recently posted..Pumping For TwinsMy Profile
  3. I used to post every weekday at 5:00 pm EST. Now, life has started to get in the way, and sometimes it doesn't happen until 8 or 9 at night. I don't notice any difference in traffic, so I don't think it really matters. Kristen recently posted..BackMy Profile
  4. Oh dear, don't know that I pay it too much mind. If I am putting up Makes My Monday or Way Back When-esday (that we host) I tend to do that the preceding night so folks can do it whenever their blog schedule permits, early or late, but otherwise, it's often write, post, publish! ;)
  5. I always try to post in the morning otherwise my day escapes me but that doesn't always happen. Especially when I start up our homeschool schedule again I am sure it will be all over the place:-)
  6. I tend to post in the early morning, but have posted later in the day and haven't seen a difference. JDaniel4's Mom recently posted..Olympics for Kids: Long Distance Bike Ride and HopMy Profile
  7. I always post right before I go to bed at 11 pm, so that when people are waking up they are able to read my posts. I dont know why I do it at that time, just always have. I will say that if there are already 50 or so comments on a post Im not likely to leave a comment. I hate that, but its just what it is. Jessica recently posted..It Feels Like YesterdayMy Profile
  8. I post at 10am my time, but that's 10pm East Coast time, the day before, since I'm in Malaysia. I've also posted before at 3pm, and once in a while at 9pm (all my time) but didn't really notice any discernible difference. The only reason I post in my morning is because if I do it at night, I feel like I've lost a day, y'know? So if I want a Wordless Wednesday post up for example, it doesn't make sense for me to post it at night, even though it's your morning. Did I just confuse you? :) Alison recently posted..InertiaMy Profile
  9. I usually post in the morning, during my "coffee time", which is roughly between 8 and 9am. If I don't post then, I usually have a little more computer time in the early afternoon, so I might finish up then. If I miss that window, though, I usually just give up for the day. The thing I think about (which seems goofy!), is that I don't want to post at 8pm, then again just 12 hours later. Interesting fodder, for sure! ;) MandyE recently posted..Weekly Awareness: UtilityMy Profile
  10. I don't care when I post. I often post in the middle of the night, like we're talking 2:30 am, and that post is not more or less read than the one I post at 8 am. I think a lot of the traffic a post get is dependent on time of year, ie. July 4th and Dec.25th not a great time for posting. Summer is slower, and yet, I also find the fall is slow because people are trying to get into the new routine of school and activities. I think there is no rhyme or reason. If you write, they will come, right? Great post Nat! Sandra recently posted..Why blog?My Profile
  11. It's interesting to read others' thoughts on the subject. I usually post last thing before I go to bed. That's just how things have evolved with my busy life. Everyone is busy too, and I get the feeling we all make it work when we have the time and what works best with our life. I think what matters most is posting at about the same time everyday (not that i do this all the time). That way if someone is regularly reading your blog, the content will be new whenever they pull it up. Jamie@southmainmuse recently posted..I was not a good mummy today. My Profile
  12. I write the night before (or days before if I'm on the ball) and schedule my posts to go live at 6am EST unless I'm linking up with a Wordful Wednesday then I post at night around 10ish. I've always done it that way... my feed goes out first thing in the morning so people get the newest content right away. Oh.. I'm terrible about commenting. I read and read and read.... but my level of commenting really needs to step up! Jackie recently posted..The great mascara debateMy Profile

  14. I usually post at 9 p.m. if it's scheduled ahead of time, or later if that's when I happen to finish a post and publish. I don't know why -- I think I just noticed that others did it that way, and I do get some traffic that evening that I normally wouldn't have. A good friend of mine that has been blogging for ages makes a good point when she said that readers aren't sitting around waiting for you to post. People don't read blogs on a schedule -- they read them when they have time. I'm trying to muster up the courage to ditch my scheduling and just post when I feel like it. 15. Interesting question and I loved reading the responses. Mornings are crazy at our house, so I always post around 9:00 PM (also midnight on the east coast) the day BEFORE I want the post to be read the most. Sometimes I schedule it, but I am usually editing right up until post time so most of the time I post it live myself. I hardly ever look at my traffic, but my busiest days seem to be Mondays and Wednesdays. Mondays I have always thought was strange, but I am grateful and typically post my best stuff on those days and Wednesdays because of my Letters For You series. 16. I typically post in the evening because that's when I have the time (and usually the inspiration/research done) to write. I read posts throughout the day and it makes no difference to me how many have already commented. If I have a comment, I'll leave it whether there are no comments before mine or 1,000 before mine. I read FAR more than I comment on, which I think is true for most readers. I have posted earlier in the afternoon and in the morning a few times but it doesn't seem to matter so far. madebyrori recently posted..help make the world a little brighter in memory of my sonsMy Profile
  17. I post whenever I finish writing..whether it be 8 am, noon, or midnight. I'm crazy organized that way...not at all. I RARELY (2-3 times) ever schedule a post since I just don't have the time/organization/desire/inspiration to write ahead of time. I don't post daily but try to post 3-5X week. I get about the same number of views on each post regardless of what time or day I post. I post how I read I suppose...whenever the time/desire allows for it. I don't read blogs on a schedule and I most often click on a link on Twitter read that post and the previous couple of posts if I haven't read that blog in awhile. It should be noted that I still consider myself a newbie and have been blogging under a year. Robbie recently posted..Strapping on the FeedbagMy Profile
