If you met me at a party, you might assume I was either standoffish or a real bitch. Truth is, I’m neither. I’m just shy and not comfortable talking to people I don’t know. I would never walk into a room full of people and walk up to somebody I didn’t know to strike up a conversation…I’m too insecure to do that!
This past weekend, I had a chance to go to meet up with several So Cal bloggers in honor of Gigi (KludgyMom) who was visiting family here for the holiday. What was weird about me meeting a bunch of women that I’d never met before was that it wasn’t weird at all. It was very comfortable and felt like I was meeting up with a group of old friends.
Everybody walked in and introduced themselves – but it was funny because we’d say “Hi, I’m Natalie…Mommy of a Monster”. Surferwife, Gigi, and Cheryl (and of course Tonya because I already know her IRL), I recognized right away and we hugged and said hello instead of introducing ourselves. I mean, I talk to them everyday so it wasn’t like they were strangers! It was so exciting to finally be talking to my friends in person instead of by email, text, tweets, or comments!
The few hours we spent together went much too quickly. Our conversations were lively and interesting – we talked like we were catching up instead of getting to know each other. There was a lot of laughing and a lot of wine.
Of course, our conversation did turn towards blogging. It was inevitable I guess. We talked about how we kept up (or tried to keep up) with comments and posting and visiting other blogs. Cheryl and Gigi had been to blog conferences, so we asked about their experiences. We talked about our favorite bloggers. We talked about what we have learned about blogging, and what we still wanted to learn. We talked about dealing with blogging burn out since Cheryl and I both posted on the subject that same week.
And you know what? I realized while sitting there talking to such an incredible group of women and bloggers, that I love blogging and will continue to do it. Sure, I might not do it as much as I was doing a few months ago (posting 7 days a week is ridiculous for me!), but I can’t quit. I’m getting too much out of it.
Here are a few pictures from the evening. These were taken by phone, which is why they aren’t super great quality. I still love ’em anyways.
Surferwife & I…or is it me? I can never keep it straight…

Me & Cheryl

Me, Cheryl, and Gigi…my favorite picture of the night!
Me drinking wine out of my a belle, a bean, and a chicago dog coffee mug made just for me by Liz
Anybody observing the party would’ve probably guessed we are all bloggers because pictures were being taken by phone and immediately tweeted and texted. Tweets were fluttering around about how others wished they could’ve been with us, and we wished they could’ve been there too (which is why I texted Liz the picture of me drinking wine out of the mug…I’m all kinds of classy, people).
So if you ever have a chance to meet up with other bloggers for no other reason than to have fun, do it. I am so glad Tonya organized it for us (thanks again Tonya!).
And so it goes…

Mama's Losin' It
I wrote this post for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop in response to Prompt 5: That one time you met your online friend in real life (was it everything you thought it would be?). This was actually a prompt from a week ago, but Mama Kat said I could link it up this week since I just met everybody over the weekend. Yes, I really emailed her to see if it would be okay. Because I’m a rule follower and I didn’t want to get in trouble for linking up using a post that I wasn’t supposed to. Why? I don’t know! That’s just how I am!

Sounds like a great time. Now is when I pout a little that I never get to meet "my peeps" and play. Ah well, maybe someday. So glad you got to have a fun night out.
  6. Booyah's Momma says:

  8. Looks like a blast!! I love the hi, I'm ...(insert blog name) phenomena!
  9. That's so great you finally got to meet your friend bloggers in person! You guys are probably all closer than friends who have known each other for years! Keep up the blogging!!
  10. I knew you couldn't stay away -- and, don't want you to, but you definitely needed to cut back, for your own sanity... You're a very busy Mom, right now, and have just so much energy... Don't worry, you'll get time back and be able to blog to your heart's content... See? You needed that networking time... Have a Happy Thanksgiving and make lots of happy memories... Come visit when you can and check out my other blog!
  11. That's great that you got to meet your blogger friends. I think that's a great idea! Just found your blog via Mama Kat and will be back to check up on you again.

    Love the mug!
  12. Looks like a lot of fun!
  13. I love the picture of you, Cheryl, and Gigi. You all look just like your avatars which is a good sign. So, I want a better picture of Cheryl's haircut. What's the length? I'm in grow out mode and looking for a new cut!
  14. amyblam.com says:
    I'm so jealous! How fun!
  15. Love it! And it's funny what Poppy said because I think the one of the 3 of you looks like Gigi, but not you and Cheryl. Well, avatar-wise I mean.
  16. I'm glad you guys all had such an awesome time! I knew you would. Great pictures, and thanks for sharing them!

We have a mini-Nor Cal bloggers brunch this Sunday, and I can't wait to meet some of my favs in person, too!

  18. That is so fun Natalie! I am shy too. Happy Thanskgiving! Have a great night!

  19. ROFLMAO on your disclosure :)

Meeting people you chat with online is so much fun. I'm the same as you, insecure at first and not able to talk to people I don't know.

    Looks like a great time!
  20. Lilac City Momma says:
    How fun!!
  21. Awww how wonderful. I am like that too when it comes to going somewhere and not knowing anyone. But I think it'd be different if I met the people who I've had the pleasure and honor of reading their blogs.
PS. I think blogging is more about quality than quantity ;)
  22. It was SO much fun! I wished we had more time! So to answer the hair questions.. My avatar was taken almost a year ago and my hair was much longer. I got in chopped right before BlogHer last year and now of course I'm growing it out. It's shorter in the back than it is in the front.
  23. Angelia Sims Hardy says:
    Fun! Fun! Fun!

I've met many people online - from exercise friends.com to e-diets message boards to my husband who I met on Facebook. :-)

I also got to meet several blogging buds too. It is amazing how you click in real life just like online.

    Great smiles on you all!
  24. Ooooh looks like such a great fun time you guys had and I'm openly admitting that I'm jealous :D
  25. Oh yay you gals are all so adorable!
  26. So jealous! And there was totally booze in Liz' mug, right?
  27. MelissaLouise says:
Sounds like so much fun....I really want to go to a bloggy camp!
  28. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points says:
I read backwards so I could find this post. I knew you'd written it, but I've been SO BLOODY OUT OF IT for the past few weeks that it snuck past me.

I'm SO glad you had an awesome time. You met some people I can't WAIT to meet (including you, dear one!).

    August, baby. August.
  29. I can't believe that I missed this post. How cool you got to meet those people. I am a little jealous. Oh how I wish that I was a cali girl sometimes.
