It’s no secret that my kids are picky eaters. If left to their own cravings, they’d live on hot dogs, nuggets, french fries, and mac ‘n cheese. While I may not always feed my kids the healthiest meals, I know how important a balanced diet is, and do what I can to make sure they are getting everything they need. Since they are so picky, I worry that they don’t get as many fruits and veggies in a day as they should. And that is why I make my kids take vitamins.
It is so important for the kids (and adults too!) to take vitamins. Vitamins are essential for good health through every stage of life, and our bodies require a broad variety of vitamins and minerals to function properly. There are 13 essential vitamins and the USDA has determined the recommended daily amounts (RDA) required for good health.
Why My Kids Take Vitamins
And while I really try to to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercise, I’ll be honest and say we are probably not even close to getting the nutrition that we need. So for us, vitamins help fill nutritional gaps and enhance our overall health.
Now I’m not an expert on vitamins and why they are so important, but this expert article on the OTCsafety site titled Vitamin & Mineral Supplements – What are they and who needs them? is full of information that explains why they may be worth considering if you and your family aren’t getting the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals that your bodies need.
One thing that really stuck out in the article was this: “Keep in mind that vitamins and minerals have extremely important effects on the body and that overdoses may be as harmful as deficiencies. Consuming a diet rich in lean protein, dairy, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables is the best first step for insuring that you obtain your optimal daily amounts of vitamins and minerals.”
If you think getting your kids to take vitamins is something worth considering, make sure you talk to your pediatrician to get some suggestions of good brands. My kids love to take vitamins, it’s a part of our morning routine.
Mom Tip: Make sure you are storing all of your medicines and supplements safely to keep your kids out of them (many medicines look like candy…scary!)
