Summer, Will You Please Go Now!

I love summertime, really, I do. But this summer cannot come to an end as fast enough, as far as I’m concerned.

This summer has been full of indoor construction, which of course included more than undesirable consequences since we have three kids to deal with on top of noise, dust, the smell of lacquer, and not being able to walk up the stairs.

Although other trips were planned, all were cancelled when this summer we experienced our first family trip to hell to the river.

This summer has been full of sick kids, me included! What I thought was me getting sick after Tater got sick a few weeks back actually was my horrible allergies acting up, and I have one of the worst sinus infections that the doctor has seen all summer. This sinus infection knocked me on my ass just days before preparing for the birthday party we are throwing for all 3 kids on Saturday…no time for obsessive cleaning for me!

This summer has been full of teething babies. I will just show you just one example of what I deal with several days a week:

Ms. M
This summer has been relatively mild, heat wise, but humidity has been unbearable! Please, oh God, PLEASE let the weather me decent on Saturday for the outside party we have planned!
See?! Who needs a vacation when you can spend your summer like this!
But you know what? I’m tired of not being grateful for the things that are wonderful in my life.
Like the fact that we have a home that we own and we can put food on our table every night.
And the fact that afford to take a family vacation.
The fact that we have insurance and can afford to take our kids to the doctor when they are sick.
That we have the means to plan a huge birthday party for the kids so that we can celebrate with our family and friends.
And the fact that we can turn on our air conditioner (in our home) to keep us cool during hot summer days.
I’ll admit, I’ve got no way to put a spin on teething babies, other than to say I know we are blessed and very grateful for having babies…especially because of our struggles with infertility.
Please remind me the next time I’m complaining that I’m blessed, lucky, and have a wonderful life – and to be grateful for it all because not everybody can say that. I’m not saying our life is perfect…far from it…but it’s our life and I love it.

And so it goes…

Mama's Losin' It

I wrote this post for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop in response to Prompt #4: Who needs a vacation when you can spend your summer doing this…

  1. You are blessed and have a wonderful life, but you really have had a crummy summer. Here's hoping fall goes a lot easier for you and those adorable children of yours. :)
  2. I hear ya, my friend! It has been a hot, humid, and hectic summer for me too. However, you sound like you had it worst then me. But I'm glad that you are able to see how blessed you really are! Just look at those gorgeous babies of your's! Here's hoping that you will sail smoothly through the rest of the year!
  3. Allyson & Jere says:
Always good to look at things in perspective. We are blessed, in spite of all the crappy things.

I hope you have good weather for the party, and no more caca eye.
  4. Here's my spin: Teething babies make for adorable photos. Gorgeous babies!
  5. It's always good to put things in persepective every now and then..isn't it!!

So sorry about the sinus infection. I have had a few of those and they really do knock you flat! Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and you will be bright eyed and bushy tailed for the big party!!
  6. Ms. Understood says:
Her shirt says exactly what she is thinking I bet. Poor little dear. It's okay to vent when things are snowballing like they are. You aren't a stepford wife . . . . are you? I hope that sinus infect clears up. It's got to be terrible when it gets mistaken for pink eye.
  7. Miel Abeille says:
Tonya said it all! You are so blessed! I'm sure you know that, but sometimes, reminders are warranted.
  8. Love that you were able to spin something so negative (kids being sick, bad vacas, construction, etc.) into something good! Way to go!
  9. Sharlene T. says:
Spin on the teething: at least, they will have their teeth and have the strong gums for the teeth to push through -- it could be alot worse! Now, I will cross my fingers that cooler weather stops for a visit to remind you it's on its way, but I can't do more than that because I still have summer garden harvesting to go through... make a wine freeze and sit down...

  10. Maxabella says:
Aw, you're allowed to complain a little and still know that you're blessed and happy deep down! Humidity sucks the life out of you, I know. I never understand people who say they 'love Summer'. I think it's really that they 'love a really nice hot day in the middle of Spring'... hope those teeth come in pronto!
  11. Pumpkin and Piglet says:
With you on the teething, it's the same here with Piglet. Hopefully it will pass soon for us all. I saw your tweets about the sinus infection. How are you feeling now? Has the shot kicked in yet?
  12. Maureen @ Tatter Scoops says:
Hope the teething will goes easily from now own, mama! Hope you are feeling better too - how's your eyes?
  13. moveovermarypoppins says:
I, too, am looking for the autumn to come.
Hope you're feeling better, and enjoy Saturday's festivities!
  14. I love the truth of this article. Being able to accept the difficulties of motherhood, yet count your blessings at the end of the day. Great post! I'm just stopping by from The Power of Moms. A site where mothers throughout the world learn from each other. Come check us out.
  15. Oh my goodness....look at how sad she is. That's the most pitiful picture I've ever seen!

I know I don't stop to "count my blessings" as often as I need to, but I am appreciating my pregnancy so much. I know that it's not always a walk in the park -- sure there are things that aren't fun and days where I'm swollen and hot and want my old bod back, but then I think about the women who struggle or can never have children, and what a blessing it is for me to carry my child, help him grow, keep him safe -- and it really means the world to me, aching back and all! Great post!
  16. MandyE (Twin Trials and Triumphs) says:
Poor Ms. M! My heart just breaks at that picture!

I hope your party goes well this weekend...and even if everything is not just.perfect, ENJOY it! Those babies are only turning "one" once! :) :)
  17. NanaDiana says:
Yep! I can see that you have had one of those summers! lol Just remember, this too shall pass....and you will look back and laugh about that awful (wonderful as the years go by) trip you took with 3 screaming kids. Yes you will....I promise. Hugs my sweet young friend- Diana
  18. I was thinking those would have made great FFOs. We can appreciate the blessings, but still hate life's annoyances, right?
  19. I am so with you. Worst. Summer. Ever.

But also like you, when I think that, I remember that I am lucky enough to be able to spend this time with my kids and not to have taken them to daycare everyday.

That being said, school starts Monday. Can't come soon enough!
  20. Dolli-Mama says:
Great post! I love that she is screaming her head off and her shirt says "Hug Me". How heartbreaking!
Teething babies so no fun, but it's worse if the teeth don't come in at all or if the come in really wrong. My little sister had 2 extra teeth that had to be pulled. My other sister hit her mouth while a tooth was comming in and killed it, so it had to be pulled out and she was missing a tooth for quite a long time! So it could be worse... but I can't come up with a positive spin either! :) Good luck
  21. Josh Healy says:

  22. says:
Oh honey, our last summer was like that. Bratchild and I both got pneumonia and had no fun. Our summers are too short, school has already started back!
  23. As I hang my head over the toilet I remind myself the same thing.
  24. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points says:
Oh that why you were at the doctor yesterday?

Ack! I will hope for rapid response to antibiotics so you can enjoy your party this weekend (and you MUST enjoy some of it and not spend all of it being super-hostess. K?)
  25. Oh, man. I keep listening to the new eminem song which mentions food stamps and WIC and I think "sure, I'm in housing hell, but I can feed my family."

Who knew Eminem could make me so positive?
  26. The Empress says:
    Eminem and me, too!

    No wonder we're sista-sistas, KLZ.

I always listen to "lose yourself" and realize some people have noother choice.
Me daily? hmmm. will it be a vanilla or mocha latte?
  27. You know, even though you get that you're blessed, I still think you're allowed to vent! It's not all rainbows and unicorns all the time! There are plenty of thunderstorms and unicorn poop too!
  28. Mommylebron says:
Psst! Guess what? I left you an award on my blog. I just think your that stellar! xoxox
  29. MollyinMinn says:
Exactly! It's so important to remember that we do have blessings. There is always the alternative, right. What a great reminder. (And I do love that sad photo of your crying daughter. teething is the pits)
  30. Mommying On The Fly says:
OOOH mama... I feel your pain.. It's never easy being a mother, but they say the rewards are plenty.. (Honestly I think MY mother is still waiting, and I turn 38 in November lol)... Hang in there..
  31. poor miss M! but at least by next summer, you'll have a 4 year old and 2 nearly 2 years old, and things will be able to be enjoyed more.
  32. Enya @ Almost Crunchy says:
Here's a positive about teething babies: they'll have more teeth to chew their food with. It's not great but it's a little bit of a silver lining.
Ever try a neti pot for the allergies?
Don't know how you get all the blogging and commenting done with all the summer shenanigans. Hope the fall brings you even more blessings and a little less of the challenges.
  33. Mrs.Mayhem says:
This summer does feel like it's dragging. Hopefully, you will have beautiful weather for the party on Saturday. And, if it's outdoors, no need to clean inside (except maybe the bathroom. :)

By the way, I wrote about the same prompt.
  34. TornadoTwos says:
awww, poor litte Ms. M! That picture is so sad, I feel for her and you too. Teething babies are miserable. I admire you trying to put a positive spin on things- I'd have a really hard time with the construction one. It's incredibly stressful to live in construction, especially with little curious people in the house.
  35. redriverpak says:
Great post! Two of my three kiddo's are grown and gone but I remember what you are going through well! You've got a great outlook on life! I look forward to browsing through your blog. :)
  36. I have to totally agree with you, this summer has worn out its welcome and can go away any time.
  37. MommaKiss says:
Oh this has been a nutty summer. Actually just the last few weeks. I feel your pain. And your blessings. Hope this weekend is nice and breezy for the big party.
  38. blueviolet says:
I just can't really blame you for wanting to move along to fall!
  39. Megan (Best of Fates) says:
    Teething sucks.

    I mean, I've heard. I actually don't remember teething.

But I'm sure it wasn't good.
  40. Natalie, sometimes the best things in life come with some crap, too! You have had a horrid Summer in many's to a wonderful Fall! Either that, or you need a mom's kids!
