I do and always have hated snakes. They slither and they’re cold and they are just scary. That movie Snakes on a Plane? No thank you! A snake as a pet? You’ve gotta be kidding me! Do I want to hold a snake? No way, Jose. That picture up there? Scares the crap out of me and I break out in goosebumps just looking at it.

I have always dreamed about being chased by snakes. Of being chased and bitten by snakes. Dreaming of snakes is “indicative of self renewal and positive changes”, according to Being bitten by a snake “may represent hidden fears and worries that are threatening you”. Okay, that makes sense…I go through changes and I’m worried and afraid of the changes.

I never ran into any snakes as a kid, so I don’t know where the fear came from. I have always thought they were just gross and they scared me. No reason, that’s just how it was. But I think a lot of people have an innate fear of snakes.

As I have gotten older, I’ve had two non-threatening encounters with snakes. The first happened shortly after I moved in with hubby (who was just “boyfriend” at the time) in 2000. He lived on a golf course, and so all kinds of little critters found their way into our backyard. One day, I opened the door between the garage and the side yard, where the trash cans were kept. And there…just waiting for me, I know it…was a 4 foot long rattlesnake! Okay, it wasn’t a rattlesnake, it was just a garter snake and it barely paid any attention to me. But it was about 4 feet long. I dropped the trash, screamed, slammed the door, and high tailed it back into the house. I sent hubby out to get rid of it.

The next time was shortly after we moved into our current house in 2002 or 2003. I had just gotten home from work. I usually parked in the garage and walked into the house through the garage door. But I noticed a newspaper on the front porch. I went out picked it up, and there was a 12 foot long rattlesnake waiting for me! Okay, it was only a foot or two long and was another garter snake. But history repeated itself…I dropped the newspaper, screamed, high tailed it back into the house, and slammed the door. I sent hubby out to get rid of it.

I should note here that hubby is awesome because he too hates snakes, but dealt with them both times. He rocks.
So Tater, in the future, don’t even think about asking for a pet snake. I am telling you right now it will never, EVER happen as long as you are living under our roof!
And so it goes…

Mama's Losin' It
I wrote this post for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop in response to Prompt #1: Childhood fears you’ve taken into your adult life.

  1. Um....thats horrible!! As you posted this I'm laying in bed with my hubby and he's watching Animal Planet which is all about snake hoarding!
  2. Sippy Cup Mom says:
That's so funny you wrote this post! I HATE snakes too and last week Hayden almost ran straight for one at the park and my husband nearly had a heart attack grabbing him.

Then this morning I was putting Hayden in thr car and one came out from underneath the car. I screamed so loud!

  3. My son LOVES snakes. He found one last week and rather than simply pick it up for inspection he was draping it on his head and kissing it! I have three kiddos and we're in the process of adopting twins from Ethiopia! I'd love to follow along for any advice you can give in terms of twins, etc...
  4. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points says:
    Umm...I'm good with snakes.

Honestly. I can handle them, cope with them in the wilds, assuming they're not rattlesnakes, etc.

    But...bees. Wasps. Yellowjackets.

That is the sound of me screaming while running in circles.

    Which is what happens.

You take the bees/wasps/yellowjackets, I'll handle the snakes.

    We'd be perfect together!
  5. redriverpak says:
I feel your pain! Snakes are my biggest a MILE!......and no one ever believes me either when I tell them that I saw a 120 yard long snake slithering out of our garage! :)
  6. Dysfunctional Mom says:
I will deal with almost ANY pet except for a snake. I hate, loathe and despise them and they terrify me.
  7. Bethany @ Organic Enchilada says:
Completely rational fear. Snakes are creepy. I also hate mice and mutant spiders.
  8. Kristin @ Peace, Love and Muesli says:
I'm ok with snakes. But we don't have too many in my neck of the woods. Mostly little garters. I'd probably change my tune if I was running into 12 foot rattlers at the park.
  9. moveovermarypoppins says:
I'm kinda fascinated with snakes, but only from a safe-ish distance.

As a pet? No, thank you.

In the wilds of New England? Not so worrying...
  10. I'm petrified of them too...I just can't be near them without peeing myself just a little bit.
  11. TornadoTwos says:
These are the things that make me glad winter is coming. Winter is kind and kills off all the big, bad, scarries. We really don't deal with snakes much up here in Maine, but my biggest fear is spiders. Oh. My. God. Spiders. Gives me the shivers just typing the word.
  12. Snakes are gross. I too hate them!!
  13. The Sharp's says:
I think you know I hate them too! Yuck! And hubs usually saves the day even though he hates them more than I do. Aw, I love him!

I hate spiders too, but (and this goes to show you how my house cleaning has gone lately) I have found a solution to some pesky little ants that find their way onto my kitchen counter... A tiny little spider set up shop between our trash can and the cabinet. Walah, no more ants on the counter. Just little ant carcasses under his tiny little web. I can live with him, but only because he is tiny and I don't have the motivation to clean!
  14. I wrote about snake dreams too! Too funny! I grew up in Wyoming and had my fair share of run ins with the beasts. We will never have them in our house either!
  15. I'm totally with ya girl. Little Man caught the most giant garter snake in WA I've ever seen and totally freaked me out. Don't know why they were put on this earth. Really? Do they have any good purpose?
  16. The husband was just watching PBS last night about fears and phobias and other crazytime stuff, and the people on PBS said that if you have a fear of snakes or insects, it's a GENETIC thing. It's simply in your DNA, nothing you can do about it.

    Weird, huh?
  17. I want no critters of any kind in my house as pets. Ever. Ever. EVER!!!
  18. I'll take care of the snakes if you handle the spiders. Deal?
  19. he's definitely more of a man than craig. my wuss can't even handle spiders!
  20. how do you feel about spiders? i heard that if one hates spiders, then snakes don't bother them, and vice versa. i for one hate spiders and don't mind snakes :)
  21. Funky Mama Bird says:
I actually like snakes. We have a black snake living in our storage area. I named him Loki and my husband and I talk to him when we get the strollers in and out.
  22. I do not like snakes....nope, not at all.
  23. I used to enjoy snakes as a child. Probably the product of being the youngest of four and the only girl. Nowadays, I can't stand the things. They freak me the heck out...especially how they can jump and swim and stuff. I have the heebie jeebies just thinking about them jumping and swimming!!
  24. Booyah's Momma says:
I can completely understand being afraid of snakes, even if you're a tough guy. Look at Indiana Jones.
  25. Oh my Gosh I would have so freaked out!!! I hate snakes. Really who loves snakes? sides little boys and Brittany Spears?
  26. My son handed me two dead flies a few days ago. If he progresses to snakes, I'm kicking him out.
  27. I don't care if they were 12 cm snakes. Still disgusting and I would have freaked as well!
  28. Snakes freak me out too but big monster spiders have 'em beat for me!
  29. sounds like garter snakes love you. snakes freak me out only if I have to touch them. BUT, I know exactly why. I won't tell you the story though because it will give you nightmares.
  30. Aging Mommy says:
I don't mind snakes at all - but now we live here in the US I have a more healthy respect for them as I never know when I meet one if it is the dangerous kind or not. Great story.
  31. OMG I would FREAK OUT! I think I'd still be screaming, years later!
  32. blueviolet says:
Ok, you made me burst out laughing that the rattlesnake was just a garter snake but I hear you...for me it's those forked tongues!
  33. Sharlene T. says:
Snakes are okay... they take care of the mice, moles, and other little critters that you don't want around, even more... I actually got some garter snakes to live under my garden and they kept the squash bugs away... but, I don't care for poisonous snakes and most of them are gone from this area, now... good thing, you have a hubby who can down his fear and save your life... that's important to know...

And, one Mother's Day, my darling youngest daughter decided to give me three (count them, 3!) snakes... something her Daddy put her up to, saying that I wouldn't want them and then she could have them for herself... it's like behind the scenes at the palace, sometimes... the best way to save yourself is to NOT do any work and just sit on the couch, eating bon-bons... that'll do it... come visit when you can...
  34. well, i don't think i'm "afraid" of snakes, but i do think they're nasty and slimy.
    shuddering over here.
  35. Completely rational fear. I fear snakes and all other creepy crawlies.
    Great post!
  36. anonynanny says:
I'm right there with you - I do NOT like snakes. I even cringe at some menacing looking worms. I my world, the only good snake is a dead snake.
  37. I don't really mind snakes all that much, but I've never come face to face with one that wasn't behind glass or on the Discovery Channel either.

I actually think most reptiles are pretty cool and I am looking forward to Lucas asking for lizards and frogs.
  38. Sheena Simpson says:
Am I the only one surrounded by creepy crawlies. Not only do I have 2 snakes, but one dragon, and one pink yep pink tarantula. And to feed them it requires touching squirming little mice. But then again I am running a zoo. lol. if you look at my blog the first couple of entries talk about them and what happened once one of the feeders got away.
