The Skipper (Hubby) & Gilligan (Me)

Remember a month or so ago when I told you about mine & hubby’s scuba diving experience in the Bahamas? When he took me to The Royal Bahamian Sandals Resort? Well, we had another interesting little experience while we were there that is funny (now it’s funny…it wasn’t then). I’m going to share with you in honor of your 8th wedding anniversary – which is today!

After a morning of diving and a nice relaxing lunch, we decided to take a stroll down the beach. As we walked, we noticed an area where there was lots of water toys…water tricycles, windsurfers, snorkeling gear, and catamarans.

Hubby: Hey look! They have catamarans! That would be kind of cool to do.

Me: Oh, I’m not sure. Do you even know how to drive or steer or whatever one of those things?

Hubby: Yeah! Come on, it will be fun.

Me: Well…

Hubby: I really want to try it. We’ll just go out for a little bit and if you don’t like it we’ll come back in.

Me: Okay (all mopey)…

So we don our life jackets and the catamaran guy asks if we know what we’re doing to which my hubby says yes. The guy gives us some general instructions which I don’t listen to, because why would I if hubby knows what he’s doing, and we set sail.

It does in fact appear that hubby knows what he’s doing – we catch the wind and away we go! On our way out to sea (not really sea, but that sounds better than off the shore), we pass another couple in a catamaran and they are not moving at all. The woman is sitting with her arms crossed and turned away from the man. The man is frantically trying to figure out how to make the catamaran go. I’m sure she thought her husband was a complete *asshat*.

Ha ha! Silly, dumb people going out without knowing how to drive (or whatever) the stupid catamaran! We can hear the woman yelling at the man, but not what she’s saying, and the man’s tone is angry and apologetic.

We are one with the sea! The wind in our hair, the heat on our skin, the salt water keeping us cool. It’s just perfect. And then the wind dies.

Me: How are we going to get back? What do you do with the sails to turn us around?

Hubby: Hmmm….let me see if I can figure it out.

Me: You said you knew what you were doing!

Hubby: Don’t worry about it! How hard can it be? And we can still see land.

And 15 minutes later, my arms are crossed, I’m turned away from him, and only turn towards him to yell rude comments and threats. Deja vu, people.

Hubby: I will figure it out! Just wait a minute!

Me: A minute?! We’ve been out here all afternoon! (It was probably more like a half hour or so) We don’t have any water and nobody’s looking for us! What if we keep floating away from the land? How are we going to get back then if the current picks us up?!

Hubby: If you’re really worried about it, which I am not I will figure this out, but if you’re worried then jump in and swim back!

No wind. No fresh water. And it is HOT.

It’s about this time that two jet skiers, having a good time splashing and speeding around on moving objects, come barreling straight for us. And at the last minute, they turn hard and spray us with a stream of water. And water coming at you that fast and that hard? It hurts. A lot.

And the arguing and threats and crap attitudes go on another 45 minutes or so before somebody from the resort FINALLY comes out to tell us we need to come in because it’s going to be getting dark soon. Hubby tells the guy he can’t get the catamaran to move because there’s no wind. So the guy explains how to get back. And it works.

The next morning at breakfast, we saw the couple that was on the catamaran when we went out. The lady says “Hey! You’re the couple that went out when we were trying to get back in.” We confirmed that yes we were. She then says “Me and my husband watched you guys sit out there for almost an hour, laughing because we had just went through the same thing!”.

I’ll admit, we all laughed about it. But while it was happening? Not funny. Not funny at all.

Happy Anniversary, Baby! Here is to many more adventures together! I love you!

I’m also helping some friends out today and I’m excited to tell you that I’m guest posting today over at In Pursuit of Martha Points! So go check out my post about the time I had to save Tater’s goldfish from an untimely death. And check out an oldie but goodie post I wrote about life before kids over at Casa Di Cass.

And so it goes…

  1. Natalie and Jason...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!! We love you both very much, and are so happy you have made a life together! I'm sure many couples have experienced your "Skipper and Gilligan" adventure in one way or another! I just let Dad think he's the Skipper...but you and I know who it really is!
  2. Happy Anniversary!
  3. Laurie Wallin says:
Happy anniversary! What an adventure that must have been. I know if it were me and my Hubs, we would have been in a reeeeally serious "discussion" (that's what our kids call it when we argue :).

Just wanted to thank you for all your humor and stories. I mentioned just that about you in my post this week!
  4. LOL!! We went to Sandal's Dunns River Falls in Jamaica for our honeymoon. We took the damn tricycle thingy out and about two minutes after getting out too far to swim back, I was tired. Hubby was pissed that I wasn't helping and I was pissed that he was pissed at me. Good times!!

We have a trip planned for the Royal Bahamian in 2012 (our 10 year!).

    Happy Anniversary!
  5. Happy Anniversary. What a great story to remember your special day.
  6. Belle's Butterfly says:
Happy Anniversary!! September is a great month to get married in! Have a great day.
  7. Happy Anniversary!! Sounds like something lew would have done. Knowing me, I think I would have tried to swim back just to prove a point.

Have a great day filled with many more adventures!
  8. Happy Anniversary! I love this story and can relate to it so much. This is totally something I would do - yell and my hsuband while he tried to fix something that probably isn't his fault in the least. It's what I do. :)
  9. Sippy Cup Mom says:
Sounds like something my husband would do!!

Happy Anniversary!! Hope you have a great day!
  10. Yup, that stuff is never funny in the moment. Happy Anniversary to a beautiful couple!
  11. The Blogging Goddess says:
Nice place you have here! So, that happened to my parents. I watched and laughed while they screamed at me to get some help. I was 16. I let them suffer. Oh to be young and in charge.
  12. I'm gonna have to remember that one.
  13. L. Eleana Johnson says:
Happy Anniversary!!! Your story took me back to my honeymoon. We went to the Sandals resort in Montego Bay and our canoe experience was one to remember. It felt like we were so far away from land. Thank God I listened to the directions and stayed calm, hubby was nervous, sweating and everything. He still takes credit for getting us back.
  14. WTH am I Doing? says:
    LoL First? Happy Anniversary! :)

Second? I could totally see myself doing this. Totally.

I'm glad you guys were not marooned at sea. ;o)
  15. happy Anniversary! But I admit, this is really funny. Especially because you were mocking that other couple first!
  16. How romantic? Happy Anniversary!
  17. "Don't worry about it! How hard can it be?"

interchangeable with, "Don't worry. I've got everything under control." These are red flags for wives everywhere.

And I can't believe I missed this yesterday. CONGRATS!!!
  18. Happy anniversary. Love a good "love story". Crazy kids! :p
  19. Happy Anniversary! I can only imagine how annoyed I would have been at my hubs in that situation...they always think they can do anything manly, but that's not always the case. Cute story, glad you lived to tell it and didn't drift off to sea....
  20. Oh my gosh...I have been in these types of situations too often to count. I'm glad that I'm married to a "can do" man, but on occasions it is a true pain in the betootie!
  21. Happy Anniversary!

Isn't it good that men are so knowledgable.
    (eye rolling)
