Project Smile – October

My wonderful friend Alicia over at A Beautiful Mess had the most fantastic idea…do something to help us find and appreciate our smiles. What are the things that happen everyday that make you smile? It could be something as simple as watching a hummingbird dance around a flower. Want to know more about her wonderful idea? Read her Launching Project Smile post.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this…simply jot down things that make you happy. I chose to do one a day for the entire month. It was a way to remind me that it’s the little things that are the most important, and to find something to smile about each day (especially on the bad ones!).

Now, start jotting down your smiles and link up the last day of every month!

During the month of October, I smiled everyday. Here are some of the things that made me happy…

September 30 – Watched this You Tube video 16 times (at least!) because Tater LOVES it! And the girls danced the entire time.

Oct 1 – Hit ‘publish’ to put my first attempt at writing fiction on my blog “The Window”

2 – Ms. L signs ‘more’ for the first time!

3 – Beyond excited about finishing Christmas shopping for the kids! Went to Kohl’s with a 30% off coupon to get clothes for the kids for winter. Realized Fisher Price toys were all 50% off, PLUS my 30% off coupon! Also, for every $50 I spent, I got $10 back in Kohl’s cash! So for $180, I finished all Christmas shopping for the kids, for grandparents, aunts, and even got hubby a new t-shirt! AND I got $40 back in Kohl’s cash!

4 – The kids were good. All day. Need I say more?

5 – Drizzly and rainy….good crock pot day

6 – I can’t think of anything. I didn’t write anything down. How about this: I made it through alive

7 – (Free) Wine and a home interiors party at my brother’s girlfriend’s house

8 – Tater went to Disneyland…had the whole night alone with hubby. And what did we do? He watched TV and I read. In complete and total silence. *BLISS*

9 – Everybody in bed early and Tater slept all night…a rare occurrence
10 – Got to sleep in. Enough said

11- Girls down at 7, Tater knocked out at 8, and I got to read uninterrupted – doesn’t happen nearly enough

12 – Our long awaited dahlia FINALLY blooms

13 – Wrote a piece of fiction that had everybody shocked (they didn’t know it was fiction at the time!)

14 – Sat and had an uneventful, quiet dinner as a family…and that never happens!

15 – In bed by 8:30….happy sighs

16 – My mom kept the kids over night. Hubby and I went to dinner and I got my new tattoo!

17 – A perfect rainy Sunday

18 – Spent the day cleaning – I love the way I feel after I clean all day…it’s nice to get so much accomplished

19 – Went bowling – without the kids – and enjoyed good company and beers!

20 – The kids were sick, so we stayed in our pjs all day. It was raining anyways so it was perfect

21 – Teething babies start to show signs that they’re almost done being miserable (finally)

22 – I wrote one of my favorite posts of all time: A Long Awaited Brief Encounter. I wish it could happen

23 – Went over to the neighbors for pizza and the UFC fight. Learned how to play LRC, and won 15 bucks!

24 – Got to spend a few hours reading an actual book! Realized how much I miss reading and know I have to make more of an effort to do it

25 – Watched Oprah, and got an idea for the novel I plan to write for National Novel Writing Month

26 – Made chicken tortilla soup…even Tater liked it (I was shocked!)

27 – Went to the mall with my sisters and all the kids….and it was actually fun! This made me smile because it’s usually “work” and not at all enjoyable

3 tables, 4 highchairs, 5 kids three and under

28 – Project Runway finale on…I think the right person won, even though that person wasn’t my favorite
29 – Ms. L and Ms. M have started to kiss each other – it’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever seen!

30 – Attended a friend’s murder mystery dinner where I got to play a bitchy supermodel all night

31 – The twins’ first trick-or-treating expedition…Tater was such a good helper and big brother – pictures to follow soon

And so it goes…

  1. Great list! I participated this month too. We are so lucky to be alive and have so many mundane, wonderful and very cool things to smile about.
  2. Sandi a::k::a KnitMyRhino says:
Yay for smiling! Looks like you had some great moments to smile about, I'm happy you can see how important those are! Lovin' the mall trip one! I haven't been to the mall in years!
  3. jillconyers says:
Wow! So many great reasons to smile. Good luck with your first publish and I'm ready for Christmas shopping too :)
  4. My first smile for this month was reading this.
Go you! Sounds like a lot of good times for you and your family.
  5. What a great list. I especially liked the ones about going to bed early and sleeping in and staying in PJ's. Can you tell I'm tired? LOL
  6. Sharlene T. says:
I like that idea. Think I'll do it, this month, and post on my other blog... Come visit when you can...
  7. Playing a bitchy supermodel sounds like a lot of fun!
  8. I need to start writing these things down.

I'm still resentful of the Christmas shopping, btw. Happy for YOU, resentful for me. Can you please give me some tips??
  9. What a fun and positive idea!

Though...I can't agree with Project Runway's winner. Yuck. LOL
  10. Sharlene T. says:
Oh, I forgot... You've been tagged because The Mom Chef tagged me with eight tortuous questions, that I've answered, and now I can torture you and seven other of my blogging friends with eight new questions. You'll find it all here on my other blog, Rockin' Chair Reflections http://bit.ly/9c2n9T.

Looking forward to your answers! And, this makes me smile!!
  11. Fabulous list my friend. I especially love 3, 6, 27, and 30. Wish I could say Christmas is done, at least for the kids. In years past I've always shopped clearance ahead. Not so much this year.

Thanks for sharing your smiles and for the great shout out.

    You are the best!!
  12. Circus Daily says:
Great list...you can't go wrong with listing smiles. I'm in next month.

But to start I'd have to say last night, when all the kids said "TRICK OR TREAT" and my lil' 20 month old instead said... "Pleeeese"

    insta-smile
  13. Oh what a great list! I love this idea that Lish is doing, but I just forget the smiles sometimes! I need to write them down.

When you look back on October, you sure had a lot of smiles, didn't you?!
  14. Snowcatcher says:
I think number 6 is my favorite, but you have such great memories here. I love how you linked back to some of them. Because, well, I missed them the first time around!
  15. Haven't seen PR yet, I tried to record it and it deleted the recording! So I'm trying not to get spoiled and will record it when it's on (or when I can find it ). But judging by your post -- I'm gonna say that Gretchen won. Cute post!
  16. So much to be thankful for. We keep a "thankful journal" at our dinner table. Every evening we each write something in it...very cool. Giving thanks has a way of changing our perspective!!
  17. Love your idea for your Project Smile post!! I didn't get around to participating this month...but had a great time with last months!!

    Happy November!
  18. The Flying Chalupa says:
Hold up...you got a TATTOO???? Where have I been? Loved this post - it let me catch up on everything for the entire month.

And the small things...so important. Like when the Chalupa does the roly-poly dance.
  19. blueviolet says:
I am so in love with your October. You had FUN!!!! and I'm happy for you about your writing!
  20. Suniverse says:
I love this. I try and do something similar by writing down five good things that happened that day. And sometimes, it ends up being . . . Cool sheets or I didn't cry. But at least it's good! Way to focus on the positive.
  21. This reminds me of how much you and I are NOT caught up with each other right now!!! hopefully we'll have some time a couple of saturdays from now !

I'm with shell tho...not happy about the finale of project runway!
  22. I totally need to jump on this bandwagon! I think it really does help to sit down and list all the things that make you smile!
  23. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points says:
    Excellent list!

But....how did you remember all those things???

Cause you can't POSSIBLY have remembered to write something down EVERY DAY.

I can barely remember to wear SHOES every day.
  24. You always seem so much more organized than I am and I'm jealous. You read books and watch TV and write? Congrats on doing Nanorhymo or whatever the heck it's called! I wanted to look at that, but never got a chance..I'm sure you will rock it. I've enjoyed your fiction pieces. I can't believe October is over.
  25. 27. Awesome picture! :p

I've always wanted to go to a murder mystery party. So did you do it? In the study, with the candlestick?
  26. Just Another Mom of 2 says:
I have loved reading some of these around- such a good idea!!I have to ask, what is LRC??
