My Love/Hate Relationship With Project Runway

project-runway-logoI LOVE Project Runway. I’ve watched it every season for at least the last six years or so, and probably have seen all of the other seasons via reruns. Tim Gunn is one of my favorite TV stars (he plays the voice of Baileywick on Sofia The First, did you know that?) and I would watch the show even if he was the only judge.

Now what’s funny about me liking (loving) Project Runway so much is that I have no fashion sense or sense of style. I’m a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl. Getting dressed up to me is wearing heels with my jeans. Seriously.

I don’t normally blog about pop culture. I don’t know why, it’s just not my thing. I have actually thought about writing about Project Runway before but then thought, what the hell would I say? I obviously have no taste if I compare my notes to the judges’ notes. People can look at me and know that I am not a fashionista, and probably wouldn’t understand my fascination with Project Runway. I mean after watching for so long, you would think I would have learned a thing or two and stepped up my wardrobe. Not so much.

But after last week’s show, I can no longer keep quiet about this. I swore that if this look I’m going to show you won, I would blog about it. Because it is entirely clear to me now that not only do I not have a lick of fashion sense, but apparently I don’t understand fashion either…at all.

A lot of times (read: most of the time) the looks I love on the show are the ones the judges hate. Or the ones I think are absolutely horrendous are the ones the judges love. Take this one for example.

project-runway-winner2This look was last week’s winning look. The top is kinda cool, but it’s the drop crotch pants (or is that a saggy diaper?) that gets me. What the hell are those things? And who the hell would wear them? If I saw somebody wearing them, I would laugh. This was the winning look?! The one the judges couldn’t say enough positive things about. They raved about it! Loved it! Were blown away by even the styling!

I see a saggy diaper. Anybody else?

People, this is why I will never understand fashion. This is why you’ll never see me starting trends or wearing fashion-forward looks. Because to me? This is a joke. Nobody I know would EVER be caught dead wearing those pants. They are terrible to my no-fashion-sense-mind. Somebody, please, help me understand.

Are you a fan of Project Runway? Do you “get” fashion? Maybe you can explain it to me…

Psst! Speaking of fashion…Kohl’s (you know how much I love shopping at Kohl’s!) reached out to me to offer a special savings to my readers! Use BTSMOMTEN and get 10% off all of your Kohl’s online purchases! You can even combine this with other department specific codes (but not other site-wide codes). You’re welcome.

  1. I'm exactly like you. I've watched all the seasons, love them, and am NOT personally fashionable AT ALL. I agree the look was hideous, but I do love seeing "whats happening" in fashion season over season regardless of if its actually wearable in my mind. Interestingly, a friend is 2 seasons behind watching on netflix. She commented to me the other day how it seems like the fashions she's watching from 2 seasons ago already seem "out of style" to her. I guess its just "signs of the times" and thankfully we know those disgusting pants will be out of style as fast as you can say diaper. 2. I love Project Runway too and have watched it forever. I usually have the same problem the clothes that I like are the losers! My favorite part is when they show the up close of the clothes and you can see what a rush job the designers did. I did love that Tim used his save last week. It was a tear jerker!
  3. I don't really get that look either. From the front, it reminds me of a tennis skirt but it definitely looks like saggy diapers from the back. With that, I do love Project Runway except since it moved from Bravo to Lifetime, I can NEVER remember when it's on! wendy recently posted..Apple TV Giveaway! My Profile
  4. I was so glad that that outfit won this past week, actually! I thought it looked really great. I loved the jean jacket, and while I would never wear those pants and I would probably snicker at anyone who would, it looked great on the runway. I've come to learn that high fashion isn't made for the masses so I can appreciate it while not liking it, if you know what I mean. 5. I always disagree with the judges! Well, 80% of the time anyway. I'm so glad Tim Gunn is more involved in the process now, outside of being a mentor. About freaking time! Alison recently posted..Children and TechnologyMy Profile
  6. I have actually never watched the show, but I seem to often have that reaction to cutting-edge fashion. I guess I just don't get it. I am a T-shirt and jeans kinda girl, too. I don't think I could ever pull off a look from the runway. And some I just wouldn't want to. Kim@Co-Pilot Mom recently posted..Last CallMy Profile
  7. I didn't understand why that look won either. There was a dress or something that night that was WAY better. Jennifer recently posted..Summer Loving, Creative WritingMy Profile
