I remember the first time I ever heard of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. A friend mentioned it on Facebook, so I immediately went to check it out on Goodreads to see what all of the fuss was about. Turns out, the series had great reviews and several of my friends had read it and given it great reviews. Now that Mockingjay-Part 1 is about to be released on November 21st, I can hardly stand the wait!

Do you know anything about The Hunger Games? Let me fill you in (synopsis from Goodreads)…

The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The ‘tributes’ are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.

When 16-year-old Katniss’s young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

Sound unbelievable? Maybe. But it makes for a damn good story! And even though it’s aimed at a teenage audience, I enjoyed the books very much. Katniss is a strong female character and she draws you in from the second you start reading. I also really enjoy when I book comes to life on the big screen exactly the way you imagined it would. This series definitely does that. And it keeps you on your toes throughout the story. Another bonus!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1, has Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she (literally) stops the games forever. Under President Coin’s leadership (Julianne Moore) and the advice of  friends, Katniss fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation who loves and trusts her courage. Mockingjay-Part 1 is the third in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

Now last year about this time, the second The Hunger Games movie was released. My mom had never seen the first one, so we sat down to watch it. Ethan was instantly hooked too. In fact he ended up going with my mom to see part 2! So our plan is to sit down this weekend and watch the first two over again to get The-Hunger-Games-refreshed. Then we will all go see Mockingjay-Part 1 together!

Still not sure if this series is for you? Check out the trailer for Mockingjay-Part 1.
