I can’t tell you how much I have loved to read since I was a child. It’s always been something that has been a part of who I am. And lucky for my bookworm heart, it seems that Ethan and Mia are both picking up a love of reading too. We have lots of favorites, but I think the one that gets read the most is Love You When You Whine.
Like I said there are lots of favorite books – Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and anything by Dr. Seuss. But this story is special to us because it’s a good reminder for both me and the kids about loving unconditionally.
If you’ve never read Love You When You Whine with your kids, you should. The story is about a patient mom who tells her daughter that she loves her, no matter what trouble she gets into.
Her daughter is a typical kid who throws tantrums, unfolds folded laundry, complains, and makes messes. The story is such a great way to enforce the belief that no matter absolutely what, moms always, ALWAYS love their kids.
So after either me or one of the kids have a particularly rough day, we always sit down together and read Love You When You Whine. It usually also leads to them asking me “Do you love me when I _____” to which I respond “Yes. Always.”
This story is so special to us that I’m going to buy a copy for each of my kids and put them away until they have children. It’s a easy, sweet way to say that even if there’s bad behavior, there’s always love.
What are some of yours and your children’s favorite books to read together?
