I’m pretty sure my kids could live on berries alone. They like them all, and strawberries are a staple in our kitchen. I love finding berries on sale, and often buy more than we can eat in just a day or two. The problem is, they seem to mold way too quickly. There’s nothing worse than paying 5 bucks for a pint of berries, only to find that fuzzy mold growing on them the next day. So I wanted to share how to keep berries fresh longer.
How To Keep Berries Fresh Longer
You might not believe me and it might sound way too easy, but the tip for how to keep berries fresh longer is this simple: wash them with vinegar.
Yep, it’s really that easy.
When you get your berries home, prepare them like you are going to eat them (meaning remove the stems and any yucky ones there may be.) Then put your berries into a bowl filled with one part vinegar (white or apple cider) and ten parts water. Gently mix the berries around, then drain them. Rinse them in cold water and put them in the fridge.
Now that you know how to keep berries fresh longer, stock up! Berries will stay fresh and mold free for well over a week. I couldn’t believe it until I tried it myself!
Vinegar kills mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit. You can use vinegar to kill any type of mold…it’s a safe alternative to using harsh chemicals.
