I recently told you about one of our favorite healthy snack ideas that my kids love: Mia’s Tropical Fruity Yogurt.
We eat lots and lots of yogurt for breakfast in smoothies, as part of the kids’ lunch when they don’t want a sandwich, and even frozen Go-gurts as an on-the-go snack. I eat yogurt with fruit as a meal for breakfast and lunch, and if I’m being honest, sometimes for dinner. We are a yogurt lovin’ family!
One thing that I think about often is how to use yogurt to create new and different healthy snack ideas for the kids. Whether we are camping, at the beach or pool, or even as an after dinner snack, yogurt is sweet and creamy and tastes more like a treat than a healthy snack. And because Yoplait has SO many flavors (hello, Caramel!) it’s fun and easy to come up with creative ways to make healthy snack ideas.
Since Mia got to make her own healthy snack, Lila wanted one too. She decided on Frozen Yogurt Banana Un-Splits. Sounds weird, but it’s delicious! It’s like a deconstructed banana split. I know the kids wouldn’t eat ice cream with a whole or even half of a banana, or without a ton of chocolate and whipped cream. But I knew they’d eat a few slices of banana and that I could “trick” them into eating something that would taste good but that’s more healthy for them than an old-fashioned banana split. So we came up with this a new healthy snack idea – a fun twist on banana splits.
Healthy Snack Ideas: Homemade Frozen Yogurt Banana Un-Splits
These are fun to make because the kids get to use the ice cream maker to make the frozen yogurt. They are also super simple to make and can be versatile, too. Add any toppings your kids love!
Start with 3-4 cups of Yoplait All Natural Plain Fat Free Yogurt
Add stevia to taste (it will come out less sweet than you think, so add a bit more than you usually would), and about 1 tsp. of vanilla extract (the real stuff, not the imitation.) The kids added a few mini chocolate chips to the mix as well. Put it all into a prepared ice cream maker and let the ice cream maker work its magic for about 15 minutes or so. Then freeze for about 30 minutes to set.
Then the fun begins!
I scooped the vanilla frozen yogurt into a small bowl and cut up a banana. I pulled out mini chocolate chips and the Yoplait Caramel yogurt to act as the syrup and whipped cream. It worked!
Lila carefully added all of her toppings.
We used a resealable plastic snack bag as a “piping bag” for the Caramel yogurt.
And I had happy girls eating frozen yogurt banana un-splits! Too fun and definitely a keeper. Next up: Caramel frozen yogurt with apples!
