Do You Believe In Ghosts?

Do you believe in ghosts? I do. Because I’ve seen one, and felt the presence of another one. If you think I’m a weirdo, you can go ahead and stop reading now. Because I’m going to tell two short ghosts stories.

The first one happened before hubby and I got married when we lived in this little 1920’s bungalow at the beach. We rented it, unfortunately we didn’t own it because I loved that house, ghost and all. When you walked into the house, everything was like one big room with some dividing walls. To the right of the door was the family room/living room/sitting room – whatever you call the main living area in your neck of the woods. Straight ahead of the door was a little (little!) dining room, and behind that was the kitchen. If you were in the dining room, you’d hang a right to go back to two little (little!) bedrooms and the bathroom.

Our ghost was an old man. The ghost was very curious about me, but didn’t like hubby. I never actually saw him head on, only out of the corner of my eye. He would stand at the edge of our dining room table and “watch” me do whatever I was doing in the family room. When I sensed him, I’d turn my head and he’d be gone. Sometimes, usually at night, you could hear footsteps in the little hallway between the dining room and the bedrooms. Hubby used to work overnight and I’d be home alone…but I was never afraid when I’d hear the steps. I never got a “bad” vibe from my encounters with the ghost.

So I finally broke down one day and told hubby that a ghost was living with us, and he of course rolled his eyes at me. He didn’t believe me. And he didn’t believe in ghosts…until one night when he fell asleep watching TV on the couch. I had already went to bed. He was sleeping on his side, with his face facing the couch cushions. Out of nowhere, he was punched in the side. Hard. He said he’d never experienced anything like it before. I asked him if he was sure it wasn’t just a sharp pain; he said he knows what a punch feels like. I’m pretty sure he believed in our ghost after that!

My next encounter with a ghost had to do with my with my mother-in-law. I wrote about how much she meant to me in a post called Cuz I Gotta Have Faith. She passed away a few years before we went through our fertility treatments to get pregnant with Tater. Right after we had just completed our first treatment, in vitro fertilization, I was on complete bedrest for three days (getting up only to use the bathroom). On day three, I was laying on the couch reading, and of course thinking about whether or not I was pregnant. At the same time I was asking myself the question, I “felt” and “smelled” my mother-in-law, and I knew I was pregnant. It was like she told me that I was. Since then, I’ve “felt” and “smelled” her in our children’s rooms – it’s an amazing feeling and I love it. I can’t wait to “feel” her again.

Do you believe in ghosts? Have a story? Think it’s all a bunch of crap? Do tell!

And so it goes…

  1. Oooooo!! Ok, I got chills after reading this one. I guess that means I'm a believer, too! I have felt the presence of a couple GM's (ghost moments) in my life, but none that stick around. I had a similar story w/my father, who passed away when I was 3 months pregnant with my eldest daughter. Days after my daughter was born and we were home from the hospital, I was rocking her in her room and I could FEEL my father with me. I could smell him. He was there. I will never forget it. Thanks for helping me think of him right now! Cool post!
  2. I totally have chills as I write this. Ok, so if you read my last post you know that I believed there was a man living in our attic. HUbs never believed me. And just the other day I was sitting at my computer very late in the office. And at 1:40Am on the nose I heard children laughing. Not one, but mulitple ones. And my hair stood on end. There were none anywhere to be found. Seriously. I've also had strange paralyzing experiences when I know there is a presence in the room with me. I do believe that there are spririts/ghosts (whatever you want to call them) that hang around for who knows why. The movies make you believe it's unfinished business. Wow. I'm kinda freaked. It's 12:20 and everyone is sleeping and I should not be talking ghosts!
  3. Pumpkin and Piglet says:
I believe in ghosts. In one of the bedrooms at my grandparents house, there was definitely something there. We would hear footsteps in the room when we were all downstairs and when you were in the room there was a very distinct feeling of being watched. I also think animals can stay around as ghosts too. I was staying at my mum's shortly after one of her cats had died. I woke up in the night thinking one of the cats was in my room. I could feel one sitting on my chest and hear it purring. I put out my hand to stroke it - no cat. When I turned the light on and looked (ALL around the room) there definitely wasn't a cat in there and the door was still tightly shut!
  4. Allyson & Jere says:
That is totally cool, and a little crazy as well. I haven't actually seen or had personal experiences, but my husband and sister in law have had some CRAZY, very real experiences with ghosts and or presences. I totally believe.
  5. totally believe in ghosts, the old man story gave me chills! in fact i think you have got me inspired for a post...i was having bloggy block. thanks!
  6. Mrs.Mayhem says:
I wish I didn't, but I do believe in ghosts. The story about the old man watching you is creepy, but your husband getting punched is downright scary! I'm curious how long after you left that house??

I have felt my grandmother's presence a few times, right after her death and a few months later. I couldn't see her, but I knew exactly where she was in the room (sitting on the bed next to me).

    Interesting post!
  7. Love it, love it, LOVE IT!!! I'm so glad you wrote a post about it! I've never heard of physical violence before - that's an awesome story! I have a somewhat similar baby story I'll have to write about.
  8. Kristin @ Peace, Love and Muesli says:
I am a scardy cat about ghost stories and knew I shouldn't of kept reading. But of course I did. Now I am shivery and scared.
Wonder why your old man ghost didn't like your husband? I'm betting he had a crush on you. I imagine you remind him of his wife, who he lost tragically. She was probably pregnant with their first child.
You see my problem with ghosts and my imagination.
  9. The Sharp's says:
WOW! I love your ghost stories! That is too funny about your old man ghost. Apparently he thought your hubby was a jerk and was in need of a butt kickin!
The one about your MIL gave me goose bumps. That is amazing that you sense her in your kid's rooms. AMAZING!

I have never experienced a ghost, but I have had extreme feelings of my grandparents. Like not being able to get them off of my mind and just getting such a strong feeling that they are close. I lost them quite a few years ago too. I love having memories of them come up like they were yesterday!
  10. Okay, too freaky weird cause as soon as I saw this title, I remembered a dream I had last night about seeing a ghost! Creepy. Sounds like that old man ghost had a little thing for you seeing as how you didn't get a bad vibe from him but he punched the hubby in the side. I don't think it's crap at all...I did a high school research paper on whether ghosts exist or not and I got an A! I used to feel my first husband around a lot after he died and still do at times but I think that's different from a ghost but I don't wanna rewrite my high school paper here on your blog! good post.
  11. Sippy Cup Mom says:

I totally believe in ghosts! I will have to write about my experience.
  12. Dazee Dreamer says:
I believe in ghosts. I haven't witnessed any, but my son has. People wouldn't believe him (including my hubby), but I did. I totally believe your mother in law has a special place with your kids. That is awesome.
  13. Wow! That's amazing!! I have mixed feelings about ghosts. I don't really believe in them but I don't 'not believe' what you are saying. I think ghosts only show themselves to those who truly believes in them and since I don't, I've never had an encounter. A lady at work has similar stories and is convinced a ghost lives with her, I love to hear her stories as well.
  14. Ms. Understood says:
I wish I did. I'd love my mom to visit me. That's really cool that you felt her and feel her around your children. The closest I get to that feeling is dreams. LOL @ old ghost man being jealous of your husband.
  15. Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points says:
I have NO intuition, NO sense of the paranormal, NO anything.

It's like my receiver is broken.

    Is that good or bad?
  16. Maureen says:
Ouchy for your hubby but this gave me the chills! I do believe that there are ghosts/spirits out there. Just last year on New Year's Eve my family and I spent what suppose to be a 2nights stay at the marriott hotel where there were 2 bombings before. While we were having dinner, Lil' A told my brother there's an uncle standing by the window. There's no one there but the restaurant was where the second bomb exploded only months before. My brother's GF who can 'see' these kinds of things confirmed it days later *she said she didn't want to freak my mom out*. Lil' A 'saw' something else in the room that my parents were staying but this time he said it's a 'mask' and sure enough my parents checked out early. I think young kids are more sensitive with these kinds of 'after life being'.
  17. Karen Mortensen says:
I loved your stories especailly the one about your MIL. So cool.
I do believe in ghost too. My grandmother had one in her house. Never saw it or anything.
The night before my dad's funeral he stood at the foot of my bed all night. Later on he was in my house for a while. I still think he is around from time to time.
Once I had a bad ghost. I was sitting at my desk at work and they were in the front of my desk. Real creepy. I told them to leave and they did. That was real scarry.
From time to time I feel there are spirits of people walking around my house. I am not sure who they are but I feel comfortable with them. I think they are people in my family that I wasn't able to meet here.
I hope know one thinks I am weird but I really believe in all of this stuff.
  18. Belle's Butterfly says:
My parents house use to have a ghost. We think she has moved on because shes been quite for the past few years. She use to turn lights on in the middle of the night and books and magazines would be thrown onto the floors. Where they landed there was no way they "fell" off the table.

I am shocked we don't have one in the house we live in now. The past owner pretty much died in the house. our neighbors tell us all these horror stories of her. She use to lock her son in the closets and leave for a day or 2 to gamble and what not.
  19. Bethany @ Organic Enchilada says:
Did you ever talk to that old man ghost? I totally would have! I bet he was bored a lot of the time.
  20. I have chills!! Thanks you for this post.

I have so so SO much to say about this and a couple of stories to share... remind me when we see each other at some this summer. Have we picked a date yet? :)
  21. Karen Mortensen says:
I'm baaack. I forgot to tell you another story. Right before they closed my father's casket they asked if anyone wanted to come up and say their final good-byes. I really didn't but someone pushed me on the back of my shoulder. Before I knew it, I was standing next to my father. No one was around me in the room either.
  22. blueviolet says:
I completely believe in this type of thing. I've never experienced it personally, but I love hearing about it!

Oh, I do feel like my dad visited me after he died in a dream though. It was surreal.
  23. CREEPY!

YES, I'm very much a believer and have a few stories I could tell..and probably should do just that on my bloggy!
  24. I'm totally intrigued with these stories....I wish you had more to tell...if you do you totally should share.
I've never had an encounter myself...I wish in some cases that I would but then I don't know, it might freak me the hell out!!!
I have friends that have had encounters and I LOVE hearing their stories!
  25. I have never had a ghostlike experience, but I know plenty of people that have and I don't laugh at them! Did you ever find the history of the old small house to see if an old man lived there?
  26. even if i can actually feel and hear them, they still give me the creeps.

    from SITS :)
  27. I DO believe in ghosts. I love that you posted this and love even more that your sweet MIL checks in on all of you.
  28. First house I grew up in had a man that died in the bathroom. Everyone says he flickered the lights and knocked books off shelves. I was too young to remember but enough people with the same story makes it pretty believable if you ask me.
  29. Megan (Best of Fates) says:
This post freaked me out. So I've decided to block it. Hope that's okay.
  30. Oh I love ghost stories! I definitely believe something is there. I lived with a ghost too, but he scared me to death. I felt like you, that he wouldn't hurt me, but it still creeped me out. My mom, my grandma, and I, all at different times heard voices, footsteps, and just had the feeling that you KNOW you aren't alone. We named him Grandpa Hancock and made our peace with him being there and that helped! The part about your husband is just freaky though. Reminds me too much of the horrifying Paranormal movie. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that!!!
My husband's mom also passed away, only it was before I met him. I love the story you told about her because I had a very similar experience. It was when I knew I was pregnant, but before I knew they were twins and I was listening to a song on Sunday that I knew was her favorite. At that moment I knew, without a doubt, that she was there with me and that everything would be ok. I look forward to those moments and I know she visits and gets to see the grandkids she didn't get to see in this life.
  31. roxanesdays says:
I have all kinds of freaky ghost stories. Never any nice friendly ghosts like yours though. The house we're in now is the only place I have ever lived that I didn't feel something spirit-ish. Other people have though, but I think it was my kids instead of a ghost. Ha Ha!

I'm gonna get lots of crazy points for this one and I'm not just making it up to use the word, but I once felt like some kind of ghost or something had me firmly by the gullet. Couldn't breathe. Scared the bejeezus outta me.

    I love this post!
  32. The Urban Cowboy says:
I'm a believer...maybe one day I'll write about it. Thanks for sharing.
  33. The Paper Mama says:
I do believe in them, but I don't have any stories... :)
  34. Dysfunctional Mom says:
I love ghost stories, but I don't have any of my own either, except for feeling the presence of my ex-husband's late mother often.
    I came by from SITS!
  35. CraftyMomof3 says:
Great post. Totally believe in ghosts and I have had quite Safeway encounters including one who liked to watch Oprah. I am also a little intuitive. Sounds like your male ghost didn't like that your hubby didn't believe in him!
  36. CraftyMomof3 says:
Not safeway...Sorry autotype strikes was supposed to say quite a few.
  37. I have felt the presence of my long-passed Grandma and Grandpa with me several times throughout my adulthood. I like to think of them as angels and not ghosts, but believe all the same.
  38. If SHE can figure it out.......... says:
I had to stop reading the comments because I was starting to get a little freaked out! People tell me that there are ghosts in my office (which is actually a trailer outside of a regular building). My office is right under the highest bridge in the city and more than a few people have died from falling/jumping/being pushed and I guess the word on the street is that these ghosts have congregated in my little trailer for a few years......
  39. Organic Motherhood with Cool Whip says:
I totally believe in the supernatural, but have not have any experiences myself. Yours are totally amazing though. I think certain people are more able to sense spirits from other realms. You must have this gift! You are very blessed.
