Crazy Little Thing Called Blog

Stranger: So what do you do?

Me: Well, I  have a blog and I do some freelance wrting. I also work in social media.

Stranger: What does that mean?

Me: People pay me to write. And tweet. And do Facebook posts for them. To help them build their business because they know social media is important but they don’t have the time to do it themselves. Or because they want someone who knows what they’re doing to do it.

Stranger: That’s it?

Me: Uh, that’s it in a nutshell.

Stranger: People pay you for that? ::Look of disbelief::

Me: Yep.

I don’t know why, but I till feel like blogging and working in social media isn’t understood or respected. I’m speaking in general terms. If I was having the same conversation with someone who worked in advertising or marketing or any aspect of social media, the conversation would go very differently. Although bloggers don’t always get respect there, either.

But to any other person I meet? It seems like they don’t “get” blogging or social media and so they just assume I couldn’t make any money doing it.

It’s always interesting to me to hear how other people feel about this…what kind of response do you get when you explain what you do? Is it positive or negative? How can we give our family and friends a better understanding of what we do? How do we make it credible to those who don’t “get” it?

  1. I don't even tell friends and family that I blog. Or that I aspire to do social media work. :) Alison recently posted..Home Is Where All The Children’s Stuff IsMy Profile
  2. Or they respond with "oh I should do that too"...little do they know the time commitment involved ;-) Vanessa @ See Vanessa Craft recently posted..(tot school tuesday) the very hungry caterpillarMy Profile

  6. I typically get a mix of "Sign me up!" or "How did you fool them into paying you?!" People either think it's a cinch to get into, or else I'm really crafty and am selling ice to Eskimos. Does that make sense? Rarely do I get serious follow-up questions. It doesn't always bother me, but sometimes it does. 7. It's funny, I get a lot of mixed reactions. Mostly though, people don't get it. My kids, especially. They just see it as something that prevents me from giving 895% of my attention to them. Kristin recently posted..Post-It Note Tuesday ~ The Count DownMy Profile
  8. I might be credible if I actually made money, ha! Poppy recently posted..Pretty Little LiarMy Profile
  9. Dumb it down. Say you're in advertising. Plain and simple. If they ask further questions, you can explain social media.
  10. Wow, I didn't realize that companies pay for Facebook posts but that makes sense. I actually try not to talk about it because I hate explaining it. Most people are incredulous that bloggers make any money at all, and in fact, that is difficult to do. It's too hard and time consuming to explain! 11. My grandma always says - every single time someone says something about my blogging in front of her - "I don't know why people would spend their time reading that stuff. Blogs make no sense." I think a lot of people probably have the same thought, but don't say it out loud. Tracie recently posted..Pretend Fall Survival KitMy Profile
  12. When you find this out, I wanna know. I wonder if this is the reason I'm getting the MBA in social media. So I don't have to justify what I do. I totally get this and have no clue how to explain it. I just talk to people like you who know what the hell I'm talking Sili recently posted..Life Happens: Fireworks FailMy Profile
  13. I had to get exempted from an exam in October because I'm going to a blogging conference. When the prof asked me what kind of conference it was, and I told her a blogging conference, and gave me this look of...well, disgust really, like she couldn't understand how my test didn't come first. Well, for starters, my test doesn't give me $100 worth of free groceries for reviewing a new line of products at my local grocery store! 14. I think people in general have misconceptions about a lot of professions. Ten years from now making money at blogging will be mainstream and people will be disappointed in themselves for not getting on the band wagon.
