California Wine Club: Takes The Guess Work Out Of Buying Wine

california_wine_club_logo

I recently told you about The California Wine Club and how much I love the service they provide. It’s no secret that I love wine, but here is a secret: I am kind of one of those people who find a good wine and stick to it – never venturing out to try new ones. Until I found The California Wine Club, that is.

Since 1990, the California Wine Club has been searching high and low for limited-production wines from small, family-owned wineries dedicated to the art of making fine wine. For me, these are my favorite kinds of wines because they are made with passion and love…not for dollar signs. They kind of love what they do and I kind of love that they’re sharing the wealth of loving wine.

So here’s the deal…I’m trying to figure out a “good” versus a craptastic wine. What I love about The California Wine Club is that they take the guess work out of buying good wine – they only ship good wine! Every month, I can look forward to receiving a bottle of red and white wine…and not only do I not have to worry about whether it’s a good wine or not, but I’ll also get some great info with it.

Every month, I get an overview of the winery it comes from and what it tastes/smells like/pairs well with, in Uncorked, a magazine that gives you an up-close and personal look at the families behind the wine that you’re receiving. You’ll also learn about the family’s history, get an inside look at how their wine is made and details on what makes their wine special!

And if you’re like me, you’ll love the recipes that come included with Uncorked. And the tips. And recommendations. Seriously, it’s 12 pages of wine lover heaven!

This month, I received wines from Castoro Cellars. I received a Pinot Noir (one of my favorite varietals) and a Gewurztraminer. I was afraid of the Gewurz, I’m being honest. I automatically always think white wine = sweet wine. The California Wine Club continues to prove me wrong. I loved the Gewurz! And because Castoro offers it in such small quantities (usually less than 500 cases), I jumped in to reorder more very quickly!

I am very much enjoying my California Wine Club membership, and hope to give memberships as gifts during this holiday season. I encourage you to go check them out. If you’re not ready to purchase yet, make sure to follow them on Twitter (@cawineclub and @boringwineguy) and on their California Wine Club and The Boring Wine Guy Facebook pages!

But guess what? California Wine Club wants to offer you a special 10% discount on every gift order you place! Just use the code: monstertwins at checkout. In addition to receiving a 10% discount on any gifts you order from the site, if you decide to sign-up for a Wine Club Membership yourself, you will receive a 10% discount on their first month of membership and a free bottle of wine in your first month’s shipment!

Stay tuned next month for more about the California Wine Club when I receive my third month’s delivery of unknown wine! I can’t wait!

I Love Wine! Which Is Why I Love California Wine Club & Want To Give Some Wine Away Too!

It’s no secret to anybody that I love wine. I passionate about learning more about it, sharing a bottle with friends, and trying new unknown wines so that I can tell you about them in the hopes that you will try them, too. Which is why I think that signing up for the California Wine Club is a perfect way to find new wines!

Do you realize that more than three-quarters of California’s 2,100+ wineries are small, boutique, mom-and-pop operations whose wines never travel beyond their local markets and private customer lists? Think of how much wine is out there that you may never get to try just because you don’t know they’re out there! That’s what’s so cool about the California Wine Club.

I recently got the opportunity to try the California Wine Club’s Premier Club for 3 months. I enjoy the fact that each month I’ll receive two surprise bottles on my doorstep. It gives me the opportunity to try wines I might not otherwise purchase, and try varietals that I may not have tried before. I can’t even tell you how excited I was when the first two bottles arrived on my doorstep…it was like Christmas in the middle of the year!

I was lucky enough to receive two bottles from Perry Creek Winery located in California’s Sierra Foothills. I received their 2008 “ZinMan” Zinfandel and their 2009 El Dorado Chardonnay.

perry_creek_zinman The Zinfandel was incredible. Surprisingly, it was very mellow and smooth for a Zinfandel. I’m used to drinking Zinfandel (one of my favorite wines by the way) and know that they are usually a strong, heavy wine. This one was surprisingly not, and I would recommend this to wine lovin’ newbies who think they may not enjoy such a heavy wine. My husband and I enjoyed this bottle together one evening after the kids went to bed, and we both agreed that we would purchase this one again.

perry_creek_vineyard_chardonnay The Chardonnay also surprised me. It was crisp and fruity, but not overwhelmingly sweet which I find with a lot of  Chardonnays. I can imagine drinking this wine with a nice salad or chicken, or even enjoying it by itself on a warm summer (or fall if you’re on  the West Coast!) evening. My husband is not a fan of white wine. I explained to him that this was more on the dry side and not sweet, and forced asked him to take a sip or two and give me his thoughts. He said it was good, but he wouldn’t drink it because he’s doesn’t like white wine. So I ended up drinking this bottle with my neighbor across the street, who ended up asking me to email her California Wine Club’s website so she could sign up!

All in all, I’m a huge fan now of the California Wine Club, and encourage you to go check them out. If you’re not ready to purchase yet, make sure to follow them on Twitter (@cawineclub and @boringwineguy) and on their California Wine Club and The Boring Wine Guy Facebook pages!

Mommy’s Time Out Wine Review

Okay, I try not to say goofy stuff like this, but TGIF! This week sucked. All three of my kids are sick. Tater woke up on Monday with booger nose, and the girls woke up on Tuesday with the same. Runny noses, coughing, and general crappy attitudes (both mine and theirs) all abound here right now.

Thankfully, my good friend Gigi over at Kludgy Mom is the genius behind Friday Flip Offs, and so I have a very easy way to vent my frustrations without sounding like a complete and total whiner. So to whatever/whoever got my kids sick, I’m flipping you off.

I’d also like to flip off the weather. It’s been horrid and unbearable. It’s 7:00 pm right now and it’s still 100 degrees outside. Keeping 3 kids cooped up in the house all week, sick or not, is not easy and definitely not fun. So please heat, please go ahead and head back to the desert where you belong.

Needless to say, my week has left a lot to be desired. I really was dreaming about a mommy time out. And then, on Wednesday, a magical gift appeared at my door!

Read the card!
I was contacted a few weeks back and asked if I’d like to review…a bottle of wine! Well, um, yeah! I LOVE wine and so I thought it would be perfect for me! But my week was going so badly I’d forgotten about the exciting package I was expecting.
And get this…the name of the wine is Mommy’s Time Out! Cute, I know! And the label just makes me happy to look at! I’m not the best picture-taker ever, but you get the idea…
See the chair with the wine on a table…facing the corner? How do I get a time out like that?!
From the Mommy’s Time Out website, here’s a description of the wine:
We All know that being a Mommy is a difficult job. A Mommy’s Time Out is a well deserved break. These wines are delicate and fruity. They come from some of the finest vineyards in Italy where the best grapes are vinified, resulting in a long lasting finish. They are a great complement to food, or may be served as an aperitif.
Mommy’s Time Out comes in two different varieties: Garganega/ Pinot Grigio and the Rosso Primitivo. I chose to review the Rosso Primitivo.
Rosso Primitivo
Vintage – 2006
Region – Puglia Italy
Grape Variety – Primitivo
Alcohol By Volume 13.5%
Honestly, I am FAR from being a sommelier (wine professional), and although I’d like to think I’m a wine aficionado, I really don’t know that much about it. So I go by taste. And I can say that I really liked this wine! It has wonderful fruity undertones and a very smooth finish. It’s a wine that can stand up to a big meal like beef or pasta, but I enjoyed a glass by itself and it wasn’t too “heavy”. And at a suggested price of $9.99 a bottle, it’s a time out that every mommy can afford!
So although my week wasn’t the best one of the summer, and I had things to flip off, I got my time out…two nights in a row! And I enjoyed every minute of it! If you are interested in getting your own Mommy’s Time Out, head over to the website to find out where you can get your own bottle.
And so it goes…

I received a free bottle of Mommy’s Time Out for hosting this review. All opinions expressed are my own and were not influenced by any other source. I was not compensated to provide an opinion of Mommy’s Time Out wine.
