The Birthday Party

Whew! It’s finally done! The birthday bash of 2010 was a huge success! Remember I was sick the last couple of weeks? Thought I had pink eye? I finally went to urgent care last Tuesday and found out it was not pink eye – it was actually allergy related! Apparently, I have horrible allergies. And that led to a horrible sinus infection. I should mention my sinuses didn’t even hurt, but there you have it. So I spent Wednesday recuperating. That left only Thursday and Friday to clean, and since I recently admitted to being a psycho cleaner before a party, that wasn’t much time. Which explains why I’ve been MIA since last Wednesday! I’m really going to get caught up this week…

Anyways, back to the party…it was a blast! 80 people showed up to help celebrate – 46 adults, 26 kids, and 8 babies a year old or younger. So chaos ensued as expected. And while we knew we’d get a Southern California summer day, it was 105+ degrees and humid. Not exactly outside party weather! But everybody was a trooper, and while most of the party was set up outside, lots of guests were inside, too. And we have the palapas in the backyard that are 10-15 degrees cooler underneath, so while still hot, at least it was bearable with the fans going.

Oh, and did I mention the huge water slide we rented for the kids? And “huge” is not really an exaggeration. 16 feet high and 24 feet long. And from the minute the kids arrived until the minute the guy came to pick it up that evening around 8:30, there were kids on that thing the entire time. I wanted to go down, I had my bathing suit on and was ready, but just never found a few minutes to do it!

View from across the street – yes, that thing is as high as the second floor of our house!
Tater going down with Cousin N
The kids lining up and waiting for turns
Me and Tater (who needed a little break)
Everybody sitting in “the splash zone” at the bottom of the slide to stay cool
There was also lots of food and drink! We had “The Taco Guy” cater the party. The bomb Mexican food made to order. Carne asada, chicken, and al pastor tacos and beans and rice. Yummy!
And while I considered not posting this picture, I decided to do it. Because I’ve mentioned before my family and friends are heathens and so yes, there was a ton of beer at the party (as well as soft drinks, water, and juice). Eight cases of beer to be exact. And every single last beer was drank by the time the last person left. That’s how my crew rolls! I was too busy running around being a good hostess to drink more than one or two during the party.  After the party though, was another story all together…
The birthday girls checking out the beer before we got it in the fridges outside
And no birthday party is complete without cake! Tater wanted a Spider Man cake. By the time I got to take a picture of it, he had already tasted the goods, although he denies putting his fingers in it.
Yes, the cat it out of the bag. Tater’s name is Ethan. I will continue to refer to him as Tater though since we all call him that 95% of the time anyways!
Note that Tater is singing “Happy Birthday”, too
Blowing out the candle (Spider Man…he picked it out himself)
Sticking his fingers in there again…in front of witnesses this time! Look at Cousin K in the back upset because he didn’t get to stick his fingers in, too!
And we sang again separately to the girls. Before we even decided whether or not to try to light the candles and hold them away from them, they decided the candles looked like more fun to eat than the cake. So the candles were quickly thrown out.
Ms. L and Ms. M digging in
Ms. L enjoying
Ms. L wondering why we’re all laughing
Ms. L really enjoyed her cake. Enough so that we hosed her down afterwards!
Ms. M trying to figure out how to get it all in at once
Eating the cake, not the frosting, which was surprising
Oh, there’s the frosting!
The aftermath
Because Ms. L is an exceptionally messy eater, photos of her after finishing her cake:
And no party is complete without presents, right?! But tell me that this is not ridiculous:
I should mention this table seats 12. It’s huge. And Sunday morning it took us over an hour to open them all! There were so many toys we are putting some of them away for later and not letting them open all of the toys at one time. It looked like a Toys R Us blew up in our living room.
Because neither hubby or I was thinking, we did not get one picture of all of us together! We don’t even have one picture of just him and I together! I always forget to get those pictures until it’s too late.
The kids had an amazing day and our family and friends showed them a lot of love. We are so blessed and appreciate that we have the best family and friends ever to help share the kids’ big day! And I’m also glad that I don’t have to think about another birthday party until next year!
And so it goes…

They are just sitting up in the closet, they just had sooo much!
  13. Several things: a) I want an invite to one of your parties - that looks like a BLAST! b) I want to throw a party now. I LOVE entertaining! c) Your home is stunning and your kiddos are deliciously cute. d) This brought back so many sweet memories of my girls' first birthday just a few months ago... sigh. Happy birthdays, Mamma! (Oh, and if people told you that twins get easier after a year, they were either full of shit or they didn't also have a 3-year-old.)
  14. Belle's Butterfly says:
Looks like you had a great day and a really fun time. That water slide looks so much fun, too bad it will be way too cold here in October to have one at Belle's party. I love the cake with the little finger prints, too cute!

    WOW. What a party!!
  22. Damn, girl, your backyard is wicked! I thought your town was a much older neighborhood. Apparently not? That is da bomb. (we had a yard like that in Scottsdale, really miss it!)

You had front yard, backyard, the whole works! And that doesn't seem like THAT much beer considering how many peeps you had (that picture is precious, BTW!)

Good job Mama! now get yourself a well-deserved rest!
  23. MommaKiss says:
Sweet Jesus I want to come to a party at your house! Frikkin awesome!
I'll even bring presents. That pic of the girls on the beer MUST be saved for their yearbook.
  24. I can't believe you considered not posting that picture of the girls with the beer. Of course, I loved it. Now I really wish we were neighbors. Of course, you may have needed 9 cases of beer, but I would have helped you clean up.

Now you have to post about the after-party....
  27. I never had a splash zone at my birthday parties! My birthday is in July so I know all too well the pain of summer birthdays. Looks like a great time was had by all!
  28. Booyah's Momma says:
You guys know how to throw a party! 80 people sounds like some shindig... you probably needed a few more of those beers after everyone left.

And I love how one of the girls attacked that cupcake, and the other one seemed to pick at it daintily. Too cute.
  29. what a wonderful party and SLIDE!!!!!!!!

  35. Glad the birthday party was such a smashing success, despite the heat!

I love the picture of the girls and the beers cases. What's a kids party without a little something for the adults?

I also love the photos of them with the cake. priceless. I wish I had thought of stripping LMW down in his birthday. He was a disaster.

    So fun!!
  36. Oh my goodness! When you throw a party, you THROW a party!! Incredible!!!!
  37. Oh goodness! These pics were great! Um, the water slide? Taco Guy? Beer? Palapas? I want to come next time!

And, yes, that's an insane amount of presents!
  38. redriverpak says:
I'm gonna send a link to this post to my elderly parents along with a sarcastic note telling them how much my parties as a kid TOTALLY SUCKED!! compared to the shin-dig you people had!
  39. The Flying Chalupa says:
Holy. Shit. You had CONES marking off sections of the street! You had it CATERED! I'm throwing in the towel. I'm done, I tell you, done! Next year, we're heading to your house. It looks like there are enough presents to go around. :)
  40. Holy cow now that is a party! And seriously it is the end of August why is the heat showing up now? We hit 108 here today.
  41. Holy crap. I'm going to break my own internet rules and say that party was EPIC! I mean, if I was a kid across the street having to eye that slide all day, I'd hate my parents for not being that awesome. And the twins on the beer?! Reminds me of one picture I have with D1 where she's laying on top of a huge thing of fireworks. Quality parenting, I tell ya!
  42. The Princess of Sarcasm says:
Beer and a taco guy at a kids party? You are MY KIND OF GIRL!! My husband was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. He misses taco guys. Or little old ladies that drive around with a trunk full of tacos and tamales....
  43. What an awesome party! I am with you we cant have a party in my family with out beer and wine being served LOL. But add tacos, and a giant water slide too! I am so jealous I wasn't there parting it up with you guys LOL. I am glad everyone had a great time. The pictures are great, I loved the picture of the spiderman cake and the fingerprints LOL.
