Another Reason Not To Be On Your Cell Phone While Driving…

What do you get when a 21-year old girl who has only been driving for three months decides to answer her cell phone as she is driving 60 miles an hour down a residential street and hits a 5,000 pound parked truck?

I’ll show you…

As she came barreling down our street, she said her cell phone rang. She bent down — not to answer it but to turn it off — and hit my husband’s 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. The truck that had only 30,000 even if it was 7 years old. The truck that was paid off.

There were no skid marks…she didn’t even try to break.

We heard the noise and ran outside to find our truck about 10 feet back from where it was originally parked, pushed up and over the curb and our mailboxes, finally resting on the sidewalk. Her car was upside down in the middle of the street.

She crawled out, unhurt. Thank God it was 9 PM and nobody was outside. Thank God there was nobody in the car with her. She wasn’t drinking. Nobody was hurt. Or killed.

Point Of Impact

The metal that you see under the truck is the drive shaft.

Mailboxes…the pole was completely ripped out of the ground.

I am not a car person, but from what I understand, the rear axle is messed up and the frame is probably bent. It’s a total loss.

I’m just hoping that this is not going to be an indication of what’s to come in 2012!

Psst! I’m over at This Blogger Makes Fun of Stuff talking about some really craptastic customer service that Every Day With Rachael Ray delivered!

  7. Oh no! I’m really glad it wasn’t worse- how scary. You’re too kind as I would be calling her every bad name in the book. Thank you yet again for the reminder to leave my phone the hell alone in the car.

  8. I really do hope she learned a lesson from this. And I am so sorry about the truck, that sucks all kids of ways! I am curious how much trouble she is likely to get in? I am assuming 60 miles an hour down a residential street is going way over the speed limit.

  23. Omigah. I think my blood pressure went up just reading this. Hope you are able to work out a good deal with the insurance company. Also glad no one was hurt.

I actually have a friend this happened to in college, except it was a couple of drunk frat brothers, and they banged on the door of her house, bleeding and begging her not to call the police. She drove a Land Rover, and it was totaled, too.
