It’s the dreaded moment when the phone rings and you learn friends are in town from out of town, and want to swing by in an hour. You were in the middle of watching Real Housewives, ahem I mean doing laundry, and the house is a total disaster.
What to do? Here are 5 cleaning tips – for when you really don’t have time to clean – that will make your house look and smell like you cleaned all day.
Quick & Easy Cleaning Tips
Fake It Till You Make It
Okay now this is not something I do regularly, but I can tell you when I have no time to do what needs to be done, I hide the mess. Pile up all the papers stacked on the counter and stash them in a cupboard. Quickly load the dishwasher. Shove the dirty clothes into the laundry door and kick the door shut. Heck, kick all the doors shut for that matter. Throw the kids toys in their rooms under their beds, for them to clean up later of course. Use this make-your-own all purpose cleaner recipe (it smells like what clean is supposed to smell like) to give counter tops a quick once over.
Point is, you can make your house look clean without actually doing much cleaning. I recommend that you don’t do this unless you are in dire straits because it’s too easy to get used to doing even when you really do have time to clean.
Light A Candle, Turn On Some Lights, Put On Some Music, and Open Some Windows Or Turn On A Fan
Doing all or any of these things will instantly make the house feel cleaner and more open.
Get one of those sugar cookie candles and put it in the kitchen. Your guests will assume you’ve been baking!
Turn on some music to bring some energy into your home.
Light in general will make your house feel more awake and alive. Open up some windows if you live where you can do that (it was 80 degrees today in So Cal). If not, turn on a fan to get that stale air moving. Light and fresh air just helps the house “feel” clean.
Clean the Bathrooms
Well, at least do a quick clean in the main bathroom guests will be using. There’s nothing worse than walking into a dirty bathroom. Use those disinfectant wipes to wipe down the toilet and the counter tops, or use my make-your-own all purpose cleaner. Put out a clean hand towel and hide everything else.
Let Swiffer Help
My new Swiffer BISSELL SteamBoost has been a lifesaver. It’s easy to use, works quickly, and gets the job done without a whole lot of effort on my part.
It’s a steam mop that works on most floors, including hardwood floors, laminate floors, and tile floors. There’s no squeegee or mop head to squeeze and no bucket of water to fill; you use special trap-and-lock refill pads that you just toss when you are done with them. The steam’s heat warms the cleaner, which breaks down dirt, and then the pad traps and locks the dirt away. It really does remove soils that mops can leave behind on most hard floor surfaces.
It is SUPER easy to use – just fill up the water reservoir with clean water…it doesn’t need anything else. So easy Lila could do it for me.
Pop in one of the cleaning pads, plug it in, and you’re ready to go.
The best part about it? It’s easy enough to use that the girls fight over who gets to use it! They even make me set the timer so they each get the same amount of time.
What I like most about it is that the Steam Pads have a thick, absorbent texture that gets into grooves and pores of the floors where dirt can hide. The Swiffer BISSELL SteamBoost is super light weight and easy to use…so easy to use that I can go on to my next tip…let (or force) the kids to help.
Let (Or Force) The Kids To Help
My kids actually want to help clean…I know this will not be the case as they get older. But no matter what the age, they can definitely help load the dishwasher, straighten up the toy room, dust and lots more. This list of chores for preschoolers will give you lots of ideas.
And of course, Swiffer makes dusting fun. The girls decided that one would use the Swiffer BISSELL SteamBoost while the other dusted with the Swiffer.
