How I Teach My Kids To Live Green Like The Lorax

In our house, we love both the book and the movie (the original…haven’t seen the new one yet) The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The kids might not understand what it means to “live green” but they do understand the importance of saving the Earth and making it a better place for all of us to live.

It’s really easy to get your kids involved in living green – and these are things you can start doing today!

1. Plant an herb and vegetable garden. We recently planted cilantro, basil, thyme, dill, tomatoes, strawberries, onions, carrots, lettuce, green beans and more. Each of the kids planted a veggie or herb of their own that they are responsible for caring for.

We had the girls plant tomatoes and Ethan plant green beans. Both are quick sprouters and growers that will keep the kids interested in helping. Right now, we are all looking forward to eating what the kids made grow!

2. Teach the kids to turn off the TV and lights when they leave the room. We don’t turn on any lights at all until absolutely necessary – our window blinds are open until we go to bed at night.

3. Use water smartly. The kids know they have to turn off the water when they brush their teeth, and they all take baths together every night. We don’t let the kids play with the hose, though during the summer if I turn the sprinklers on for them to play in, it’s not during peak hours.

4. Reuse. My kids and their cousins all have each other’s hand-me-downs. Once the kids are done with the, we donate to local charities. It’s easy to do,and makes you feel good knowing that people that really need the clothes will get them.

5. Recycle. This one is easy. Have the kids separate cans and other recyclables. Teach them the difference between trash and something that can be used again or made into something new.

But another part of recycling you might not think about is composting. I have a compost bin, and the kids help me dump our food scraps in it every night. When I open the bin, they love seeing all the worms and seeing how (like magic) food and paper turn back into dirt. Composting is nature’s way of recycling!
