My First Blissdom Experience: Blissdom 2012

Back from Blissdom and yes, it was just as blissful as I had hoped!

So what can I say about Blissdom that you haven’t heard about already? The parties were amazing (and fun).

There were amazing performers there just for us and it was like being at a private concert.

I got to meet lots of my east coast friends that I didn’t get to meet at BlogHer. We had so many big belly laughs that days later my stomach is still hurting! We had heart-to-hearts, drinks together, pictures together, and now some fantastic inside jokes.

I let loose and let myself be a goofball (I’m not someone that usually lets people laugh at her, but ask the girls I hung out with on Saturday night and they’d tell you that I did a pretty good job of it!)

I went to sessions. Made new connections. Got a few new opportunities. And some great swag.

In short, Blissdom was fantastic and I highly recommend it if you haven’t been before. I am already looking forward to next year!

However some of the most important takeaways from Blissdom I might not be able to describe.

By far, my epiphany moment was in Aimee Giese‘s (AKA @greeblemonkey) session: Capturing The Moment: No Matter What Subjects You Like To Shoot. Those of you that know me or have read my blog for any length of time know that photography is not my strong suit! I went into the session wondering if I wouldn’t get anything out of it because I don’t have a fancy “big girl” camera or because I wouldn’t understand the lingo. I was SO wrong!

Not only did I come to realize that you don’t need a big girl camera to take a great picture, I also realized that sometimes the pictures that don’t even show people’s faces or expressions represent a moment more than any posed photo ever could. That if the kids aren’t all looking at me or if Lila is cyring or Mia is picking her nose, that sometimes those pictures represent the moment better than any “cheese” picture ever could!

Patience, practice, and luck…that’s really what a great picture boils down to. The skill comes after practice of course, but I’m willing to take the time to see if I can get the hang of taking great pictures.

This picture is exactly what I learned about. No, it’s not a technically great photo at all, but it captures a moment. There are no faces, no explanation of what is going on or why it’s so important to me. But it means a lot…it will FOREVER remind me of Blissdom 2012 and the friends that were already my friends, but now mean even more to me.

I’ll leave you with this video, taken by @KludgyMom. It does and probably will always make me smile every time I watch it! It kind of bounces around, but it catches the feeling of the last night at Blissdom perfectly. And watch until the very end because @ErinMargolin cracks me up!

Thank you to @KludgyMom, @MyMamihood (Boo-jah-jah), @HollyHamann, @ByWordMusings, @MyCrazyBusyLife (To The Window, To The Wall), @AngelaAmman, @CarriBrown (You’re So Tall!), @MyTimeAsMom (Dirty Martinis), @DutchBeingMe (That Was Seven!), @ErinMargolin (High Knees and What You Do When You’re Nervous), @KimberlyMuro (head over to Mama’s Monologues to see our planking adventures!), and @Frelle (Did you guys know she can sing?)…for not making me feel like an idiot even when I was acting like an idiot! I had more fun with all of you then I’ve had in a very long time. I will always, ALWAYS remember that Saturday night, high knees, fat balls, planking, and laughing until I could barely breathe! And my sore stomach muscles are still a happy reminder of that night.

My Life In A List: All Time Pet Peeves

My lovely friend Nicole over at moments that define life launched a new meme called Listable Life.

Each week, Nicole will give us three topic starters to choose from, then all you’ve gotta do is write a list of 5 things!

So here is my Listable Life…the topic starter I chose was this one: Option #2: 5 All Time Pet Peeves

When My Husband and Kids Take Their Clothes Off Inside Out

This one really pisses me off! And I refuse to turn them right-side-out after I finish washing and drying them. Jason can fend for himself. I figure I will just turn the kids the right way when I put their clothes on them.

People Who Wait Until After The Checker Is Done Scanning Their Groceries To Run Their ATM Cards

Seriously? You wait to get your wallet out of your purse/pocket until after the checker is done? Not that it takes a whole lot of time or anything, but let’s be productive while we wait, people! You can always hit the “No” key if you think the total is wrong.

Even Worse, People Who Wait To Write A Check

Really? You still write checks? Why not use your ATM card? And why do you wait until after the checker is done to whip out your checkbook and start writing your check? I’ve got places to be, people!

People Who Wait Until The Very Last Car Length To Merge Into The Next Lane

WHY DO YOU WAIT? THAT’S WHY THERE’S SO MUCH TRAFFIC! YOU are slowing us all down! A-holes.

People Who Drive The Speed Limit In The Fast Lane On The Freeway

That’s why there’s a slow lane. Seriously, get the hell over idiot.

What are your biggest pet peeves? I could go on and on, but these are the ones that bother me on a daily basis. Write about yours and link up at Nicole’s place!

Congrats to Cindi from SURRENDER IN FAITH for winning my giveaway of The Legacy of Eden by Nelle Davy! Please email me your name and address so I can get the book to you!

Mommy Moment – Jessica Style

Welcome to another Mommy Moment! If you’re not sure what it is, head over and read all about how Mommy Moments at the Monster came to be.

Today, I’m so excited to welcome Jessica from My Time As Mom! Jessica is mom to two beautiful “insane” (her word, not mine!) little girls, is one of the masterminds behind Vlog Talk AND is one of the mixologists at one of my fave sites: One Martini at a time . I love her honesty and her sarcasm. And I got to see her again at Blissdom (we first met at BlogHer 11) and we had a blast!

Go grab a cup of coffee and a donut, ahem, I mean a low-fat muffin, or depending on the time of the day maybe some wine and chocolate, and sit back and enjoy the story!

The Monster Came Out Behind The Dresser

There is always a battle in my house regarding my oldest daughter’s bedroom. Her standards of clean are far different from what my husband and I think are clean.

Daily we have to remind her to make her bed, put away her laundry, and to pick up the junk.

However, I’ve never really pushed her to keep up on her room because in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t harm any of us to have her room unkempt. It’s just an eyesore and I’m kind of a whatever parent.

But…one day, she lost her beloved iPod and asked me to help her find it. Naturally I told her to clean her room before I would help her.

Five minutes later she informs me the room is clean and the iPod is still missing.

I enter her room ready to start mission find the lost device. The carpet was visible and the bed was made so the room appeared to be picked up.

The first place I looked was under her bed. Only thing I found was a pair of boots.

Next, I looked behind her bookshelf because small iPods can easily fall behind furniture. To my surprise, I found pens, hair clips, books, and more in the small gap between bookshelf and wall.

My search then led me to behind her dresser.

That’s when the mommy monster moment began.

Dozens of white pieces of papers were strewn about behind the dresser along with a clipboard and other miscellaneous pieces of crap. I looked at the papers and they were my daughter’s extra homework worksheets that she is supposed to do everyday after school.

The same worksheets that I had spent a lot of time and money copying for her.

To say I lost it is an understatement.

I flipped out.

Yelling, screaming, pointing to various parts of the room that I was unhappy with (which was pretty much all of it at this point).

Shouting, I told her every part of her room that had to be clean and that when I did find her iPod it was mine until that room was verified clean by me.

Tears burst out of her eyes as my anger unloaded.

I felt guilty as I was exploding but I couldn’t stop.

Finally I was able to close my mouth, get up from the floor and leave the room closing the door behind me.

I found the iPod 30 seconds later and placed it on the charger and took many deep breaths.

After she finished cleaning her room she came to see me.

There were no words exchanged between the two of us for our actions. Instead she got the iPod back and we acted like nothing had happened.

However, I know the event left a scar on both of us.

I just hope her scar is big enough for her to remember not to shove stuff behind her dresser anymore.

Thanks for sharing, Jessica! I have SO been there – when flipping out doesn’t even begin to describe my behavior. And it’s funny that those seem to be the times that there’s just an understanding about what happened between you and your child.

There’s no manual out there for what we do, so sharing stories like this helps us all learn from each other.

Now head over to My Time As Mom and say hello to Jessica. If you are a Twitter addict, you can find @mytimeasmom there, and on facebook, too! And if you are a new follower, make sure to tell her that I sent you!

Lila and Mia Host The Bidness – Round 15

The Business

Lila: We are mad at my mom right now. She’s dumping us to go on an airplane to go to work far away. She left this morning.

The Business Mia: Yeah, she snuck out before we woke up. She is going to a conference. In Blissdom. Or called Blissdom. Or something.

Lila: She said she is going to miss us, but she sounds pretty excited about it. Why can’t we go with her? We are good!

Mia: Yeah, we are good! We will be quiet.

Lila: Instead, she says we have to stay home with Daddy.

Mia: Tater too. Tater is really mad that Mommy is leaving. So is Lila. Cuz Lila is a sissy-la-la.

Lila: I LOVE MY MOM! Why does everybody make fun of me because I always want to be with her?!

Mia: Because you cry if she even leaves the room! You need to chill out!

Lila: I don’t need to do anything. I already miss her.

Mia: I bet Daddy will take us to the park! He always takes us to the park.

Lila: Yeah, he does. And he lets us sleep in his bed with him. I think it’s because he’s lonely without Mommy.

Mia: I don’t know…I have heard him tell Mommy that we are horrible to sleep with because we are all over the place and we kick him.

Lila: Mommy says he is an Independent Sleeper and doesn’t like to snuggle like we do.

Mia: I don’t like to cuddle either! I just want some space. I get hot.

Lila: Well, Mommy let’s me nuggle her. I love nuggling.

Mia: Tater will sleep in his own bed. I bet Daddy tries to sneak in there too! He says it’s not comfortable, but he has more room. If he sleeps diagonally.

Lila: Tater snores. I hope Daddy doesn’t put him in bed with us!

Mia: This wouldn’t even be a problem if Mommy just didn’t go!

Lila: She says she needs to have “me” time sometimes. Why does she want to be alone?

Mia: Maybe she loves us so much that she doesn’t want to share us with Daddy and Daddy is making her go!

Lila: Oh! I bet that’s true!

Mia: Don’t tell Daddy we know that though.

Lila: Yeah, we don’t want to hurt his feelings.

Mia: Okay Mommy, we’ll try to be good while you are gone.

Lila: But don’t have fun. We want you to come home and if you have fun you might not come home.

Mia: SHHHHH! If Tater hears that he’ll go crazy!

Lila: Just come back, okay Mommy? We love you!

Blissdom, Baby!

Okay, I’ll admit: my time management skills just ain’t what they used to be. I’m behind on my writing over at Smart Mom Picks and haven’t even had a chance to visit blogs this week. I suck.

Next month will be another story because I’m significantly cutting back on my work load. But for now? I’m screwed. I have a ton of writing to do to get ahead of the game before I head out to BlissDom at the ungodly hour of 6AM on Thursday. And packing. And cleaning. And cooking. And getting my husband prepared for being alone with the kids for 4 days.

I'm Going, Y'all! - Blissdom

I’ll be back to my normally scheduled blogging next week, but in the meantime, here’s some stuff you can check out while I’m gone…
